Re: Miniscus tear and surgery
On a recent holiday I jumped from the deck of a boat to the shore and somehow managed to twist my left knee. Just as you mentioned in your OP, I still had a great deal of vacation left, so I just ignored the pain (3 or 4 naproxen a day seemed to work OK). I was limping around Paris and keeping up wi...

Creams and Soaps and Croaps, O My!
It seems like you are well on the way to shaving bliss. As Squire says, the crossover from a chore to a delightful pastime is really eye opening. On the few occasions that someone has expressed interest in retro wet-shaving, I usually stress that aspect in my reply -- the fact that what had always s...

Re: Cream vs Soap
I like using both. In fact, making a superlather by using a shaving soap stick on my beard with just a small dab of cream on the wet brush and face lathering is my most common method. The cool thing about this is the combinations are endless! La Toja stick with Musgo Real oakmoss cream is one of my ...

Re: Krampert's Finest Frostbite
Lovely, lovely stuff! Most of the comments are about the menthol effect which is wonderful, but the underlying fragrance is spectacular too. I have the shaving soap also and I enjoy it very much, but the aftershave is on my DNROO list (Do NOT Run Out Of).

I'm going through a phase of re-reading old favorites. Most recently FOUNDATION by Asimov.
One of the best science fiction novels of all time IMO.

Re: Merkur 34C vs 38C for first time?
I found Derby to be a reasonably forgiving "starter blade" but pausted's suggestion of a blade sampler is the way to go. Have fun trying out the different blades, but conventional wisdom dictates that a neophyte try to keep changes in the shaving routine -- either prep or equipment -- to o...

Re: I want to get my razor replated. Where do you guys sugge
I will be watching this thread -- I've got a couple of older Gillettes that I'm thinking about re-plating too. I know there are some who would consider a re-vamp, such as offered by Delta Echo sacrilege, but I think their stuff is drop dead gorgeous! I think I like the look of rhodium for a more con...

Re: Castle Forbes Lime
Absolutely the best lime soap I've used. I would love to try their other scents, but I am resolved not to buy any more shaving stuff (hard or software) until I've used up some of what I currently have. I'm curious what to call the consistancy of the soap -- it's not a hard soap, not a cream, not a c...

Re: Take heart my friends, it could be worse!
I am a collector of things, in a minor way, and I've collected glass paperweights, pocket knives, and fountain pens. My interest in pens led me to some of the classic old advertisements from earlier days, and I came across the slogan for a high end golden luxury fountain pen: "Jewelry you can u...

Oh yeah -- I thought I had it beat. Enough is enough -- apparently (like Dudley Moore in ARTHUR) I want more than enough! Just bought several DE razors -- two of which are duplicates of razors I already have! I see a new soap and immediately salivate like Pavlov's dog. I think brothers thread is a g...

Re: Does more aggressive equal a closer shave?
Oh, I don't know -- I certainly can't promote one point of view over the other, certainly not on any scientific level, but I find that a sharp blade in a Mühle R41 gives me a shave that lasts longer than shaves with some milder razors. How much of that is real, objective fact, and how much of it is ...

Re: Question for Squire: Why Derby?
I'm keen to see the replies -- I like Derby blades pretty well (Astra SP is my current go-to) I'm finding, as I move forward in my shaving journey, that the different blades make less and less difference -- it's the skill improvement that stands out, for me, as the pivotal factor in shave quality. I...

Progress vs Futur -- favorite settings
I just got a Merkur Progress and I'm keen to start shaving! I'm a veteran wet shaver with a bias toward efficient razors like the R41. I was wondering how other folks use their modern day adjustables -- my idea is to start with an Astra SP blade and set the Progress dial at 4. The real appeal of an ...

Re: Harris Sandalwood shaving soap
I've got the sandalwood shaving stick and it's wonderful stuff. The twist up is great (refillable with Speick stick if you trim it) and the soap is peerless -- It's just too expensive. I use shave sticks a lot and the cost per gram of D. R. Harris shaving sticks is high enough for me to use Arko mor...

Milder Slant
Pauldog asked about a slant that was a bit milder than the Merkur -- I have both Merkur slants (37C & 39C) and the only slant I know of that's milder is the ATT S1. The difference is subtle, but noticeable. Both are fine shavers, but the trophy goes to the ATT by a narrow margin. The Above The T...

Re: Want to buy Gold Merkur 37G
I've always coveted that razor too. I even went so far as to inquire at a plating company if they would gold plate a 37C for me and they refused, saying that "they didn't do that sort of thing" (my italics) -- I can only assume they suspected I would try to re-sell it as a genuine Merkur 3...

Re: Second Shave - Disaster
Definitely some words of wisdom here -- mostly your own common sense idea to take a small step back and enjoy repeating that first really terrific shave for awhile. There will be more positive re-enforcement of that muscle memory too. I have to say that, for me, a large part of improving my techniqu...

Vegan shaving soap I like
I've finally tried a vegan soap I really liked -- WSP Rustic shaving soap. I have the Mahogany and the scent is outstanding. The lather is rich and thick with excellent glide. Very easy to load onto the brush. It's quite a soft soap; not clay consistency like Cella -- more like Martin de Candre, and...

Amazing, unforgettable scented soap or cream ~your favorite?
I have loved the scents of many many soaps and creams I've used, but I think the most distinctive and surprising (each time I use it) is the I Coloniali mango soap. The clay bowl is nice, but the smell is incredible!
Wonderful lather too.
