Re: 'Website not secure' notification

It's simply that the site's address is http://forum.shavemyface.com rather than https://forum.shavemyface.com Vince could buy a security certificate and have the address changed to https, but all it would do is convince complete strangers they were clicking on a link to shavemyface.com, rather than ...

Re: Prep Revolution

Nonetheless, slackskin - if you like it you must keep doing it and disregard the gurus. Our skin isn't yours, and somewhere there will be someone who reads your words and has his shaves transformed. Keep on experimenting!

Re: Prep Revolution

I wonder how such a lotion makes the beard hair 'stand up'? I looked up a few brands, some contain alcohol, but not all, while others have oil for lubrication. Maybe it's a true case of floccinaucinihilipilification?

Re: New blade bad shave

Robert - if you are in the USA, it will probably be easiest and quickest for you join up at SRP and ask there for honing help. I've given up trying to argue with the two border agencies about things being sent for repair and then returned. The whole bloody thing was screwed up even before His Orange...

Re: New blade bad shave

Welcome to SMF! Most 'shave ready' razors aren't, so much so that it's become a joke when one is described that way. Most of us use the words 'shave ready' to mean 'blunt'. The razor will certainly need honing, and unless you're a real sucker for punishment you probably ought not to try yourself. Yo...

Re: Cats, and the Killing Thereof

The TI damascus did very well. Probably better than I've ever managed to get it before. I think I'll stick to finishing at the Escher for a while and see how it goes.

Re: Cats, and the Killing Thereof

After a very successful third shave with The Purist today, I was in the mood to extend my knowledge. One of the very hard razors I have owned for years is the first TI 5/8 damascus that was available for general sale. Don't confuse it with the 7/8 extra hollow desert ironwood-scaled limited edition ...

Re: Robert Williams "The Purist" Custom 6/8 Straight R

Seems it is O1 steel, but treated and tempered to a final hardness of 63HRC. It certainly takes a little more honing than the O1 in a Hart at 62HRC.

You know they are personalised with a medal in the base? It has the date of July 2005, the owner's initials and shavemyface.com printed on it.

Re: Robert Williams "The Purist" Custom 6/8 Straight R

It did it again today. I don't quite have the words to describe the shave: there is some quality to it that is unusual. It's smooth, but like stroking corduroy rather than velvet. Bumps, but low amplitude bumps. It feels unlike other razors, but not in a bad way. I shall try to contact Mr Williams a...

Re: What are you reading?

Robert MacFarlane's Landscapes - a book for word lovers, detailing many of the local or regional dialect words for landscape features that we are losing. I've often observed the worn hole in a hedgerow where an animal passes through frequently and thought there ought to be a name for it. Now I know ...

Welcome, Tom! I'm an unwilling retiree at sixty, but I do have more time for honing razors now, so that's a plus.

Bill, I did get the full story, but it probably isn't meant for public circulation. Lynn may yet resurrect his straightrazorplace domain, but I wish him well in retirement.

Re: Robert Williams "The Purist" Custom 6/8 Straight R

You might not be the only one with a penchant for zombie threads, Gary. I've had a Purist for a few years, but never managed to make it shave decently. Looking for a razor to hone today, I came across it and used my slurry dilution stages on a Belgian blue, coticule, Thuringian, Escher, Suehiro Goku...

Return of the VLB?

I was surprised to find a shaving forum I had never even heard of with an 18 page thread about the VLB they were having made by Shavemac!

Thread.

Re: Straight Razor Designs is defunct

The plot thickens: the old straightrazorplace.com URL now redirects to https://straightrazordesigns.com/pages/straightrazorplace. Has the evil Luke Webster got hold of that domain as well? I sent an enquiry to Lynn, but my e-mail address for him, sadly, is a few years old. I hope it works. Also, hav...

Re: Straight Razor Designs is defunct

Lynn's last post at SRP was in January 2018, and while his profile can be found by clicking on his name in his posts, his username isn't listed in the member list any more. Not looking good; hope he's OK and this is just yet another shaving forum revolution. Seen too many of those.
