A coin, or in my case it was a stubby screwdriver and a short length of surgical rubber tubing used as a stethoscope to listen to the hiss on the intake side of those SU carbs. Once I balanced the frequency of the hiss in both carbs, the rest was easy. Loosen the distributor, twist slowly back and f...

New Fraser's shaving cream scent.....

I see Fendrihan has the Frasers Oriental Spice shaving cream available now..... it's my favorite "cheap" scent in aftershaves from Booster. Heck, even my cat likes it! I'll have to order a couple of lifetimes worth of the stuff, considering the size of the jar it comes in. Christ...

Gil, While I've used just about every Merkur razor of current manufacture, I started with the Progress and tried everything else after that. It's still a great razor but I realized after finding the sweetspot on that Progress that it was set identically to my Merkur HD. It may not be the same for yo...

Dominic, To modify a quote I've heard but cannot identify from where it came, in straight razor fashion: "Good honing judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad honing judgment." So I'm sorry to hear you didn't learn anything about honing this time around. It was however ver...

To be honest, I've not drunk much in the way of bottled beer in a long time. When I'm out, I insist on Fort Garry brewery products (local, or at least they were... I think they've sold out to someone else) and have been known to tell the local bar maiden that if FG isn't available, I'll settle for a...

Hmmmm.... must be a pretty heavy emphasis on the "(somewhat)" bit.

Canadian Tax software....

It's that wonderful time of year again....<sigh>. I thought I'd just give some of you Canadian gents a heads up about StudioTax software. It's FREE , netfile certified and works as well as any of the ones I've bought over the past few years. I've use StudioTax for the past two seasons and plan to us...

As we Scandinavians put it..... "Never sniff a gift fish!" Just dig in and *make* it happen. You owe it to yourself to make this work and you are fortunate to have someone who can see that you're the man to make it happen. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. All the best and good luck! Regar...

Dave, I cannot answer your question as I do not have a Chinese 12k hone, and for that matter I think the Chinese 12k is a natural hone in which case there is no one who can tell you for sure if the 16 Shapton will improve an edge from *your* Chinese hone, unless they have used it. And to make this e...

Gordon, The key is apparently if the package is actually opened for inspection. That detail is at the customs officers discretion. Many times, low value packages will just slide through with the "Passed by Customs" roll stamp where the inspector just looks at the package, stamps it and pas...

Steve, In regards to size... the longer the hone, the fewer strokes will be required. Wider hones make it easier for the full blade to rest on the hone but if you have a warped blade, it's harder to hone correctly. Narrower hones will work fine with straight blades AND warped blades without much her...

would I get equivalent edges with a Shapton 16,000 grit glass stone used after a 12K grit waterstone? The same?!?! No! You will get great edges from a Shapton 16k, but they *will* need the Chromium Oxide pasted strop to smooth them out as far as I am concerned. I have the Shapton 16k glass hone and...

Does better mean it will leave a sharper or smoother edge (finer scratch pattern if I look at the edge with a loupe)? After my 12K Chinese stone, but no chromium oxide stropping (yet), the edge feels rough, like a used up DE blade. The Coticule hone is a rather odd bird in the family of hones..... ...

Christian, All true. In addition, if I'm not mistaken, when a package is sent via the mail, there is a difference in how Canadian customs handles a personal 'gift' and how they handle one sent from a business that plainly is not a 'gift' and isn't marked as such, no? Anyway, it is a shame that it d...

Like Gordon said, when you're running a business, time is money. Orders get picked up at Jim's door once a day by UPS, no extra effort on the store side of things, just have things packed and ready. Shipping to Canada... it worked fine with the method Jim was using via UPS but it's based on volume.....

Jim had a special arrangement that leveled the playing field somewhat. But the post office was still cheaper. Cheaper perhaps, but Jim through UPS was far more efficient than waiting for Customs to release a package on some occasions! Thanks Jim for making the effort, I for one appreciated it... to...
