Re: Back to the DE

If you only want to own one razor, I strongly suggest getting an adjustable. This will give you the opportunity to tune the setting to your beard/skin combination. Personally, I prefer vintage Gillettes, and I like the black handled Super Adjustables that came out in the late 60's the best. Of cours...

Blade Longevity

I've been wondering lately about how often it makes sense to change a DE blade. A few random reference points: 1) My Dad (who passed away this winter) apparently used a blade for up to a month before changing. (I always felt -- and still feel -- guilty and inadequate that I couldn't come even close ...

Re: Re-Thinking the Fusion

I gave the Fusion away yesterday without regrets. Glad it'll find a home. I was disappointed in it overall, and I honestly didn't think it was a reasonable value proposition. I was trying to keep an open mind to the new innovations, but concluded that there's just no "there" there!

Re: Safety razor of the Day DE or SE

1970 Gillette Super Adjustable Black Handled DE razor, set at "4" and Personna Hospital Use blade, third shave. I did an experimental detour into "Fusion-land" last week with disappointing results. Nice to be back getting a great daily shave from my DE.

Today: Gillette Fusion ProGlide Power Razor with FlexBall . . . phooey on that. Looking forward to returning to a nice, sensible DE shave tomorrow!

Re-Thinking the Fusion

I haven't really ever had much luck with Gillette Cartridges. As I've posted previously, if I'm going to use a cartridge razor, the Schick Hydro 3 works well, and it's my exclusive razor for air travel. In fact, my experience with the Hydro has been so good, that I thought maybe I should re-think th...

Re: Scrubbing Bubbles and 40s style Gillettes

By the way, my prior posting in this thread had to do with the regimen I follow when I FIRST receive a used razor from a prior owner, and BEFORE I go ahead and use it on my face. That's the point at which I'm ultra-careful to clean and disinfect to the point where I'm confident that I have eliminate...

Re: Scrubbing Bubbles and 40s style Gillettes

You may want to refer to the "Razor Cleaning Guide" sticky above. I personally don't use scrubby-bubbles. I use a toothbrush and a disinfectant cleaner, followed by alcohol soak, followed by boiling (preferably in a pressure cooker, which boils to a higher temp than 212F), then a chlorine ...

Coconut Oil as Pre Shave Oil

In the past, on the few occasions that I've tried pre-shave oils, I haven't found much benefit. Lately, however, I have been hearing great things about the benefits to skin care of coconut oil. Consequently, over the weekend, I tried a dab of coconut oil as a pre-shave, and then lathered over that (...

Re: A Full-Time Wet Shaving Advocate!

Congratulations on your new direction! In terms of your role, SMF always benefits when a highly experienced (and if you don't qualify, who does?!) member expresses views and opinions in a lively way. Debate, exchange of views, differing opinions and experiences -- that (IMO) is what makes it fun. As...

Re: Minimal Travel Gear

I will still put in a vote for the Hydro 3. It's a cartridge, not a disposable, but it is fully TSA-compliant. I travel a lot by air, and it's how I handle the carry-on problem. No hassles at security; very comfortable and convenient shaves. If I may be permitted a momentary rant, I honestly can't t...

Re: Rockwell Razors?!?!?!?

I haven't heard of the Rockwell either, and have no idea of whether or not it is a quality product. That aside, however, it is a great example of how the surging demand for DE razors that is leading to a proliferation of new products. I mostly prefer vintage Gillettes and am therefore unlikely to tr...

Brushes and Lather Quality

I'm an old-timer at SMF, but I almost never post in this section of the Forum, so forgive me if this has been asked and answered already. Basically, I'd like to know what folks think about whether there is or isn't a correlation between brush quality and lather quality. Suppose you started with a hi...

Re: Truefitt and Hill Almond Cream

T&H creams really work well for me, and I love the scents. I don't find any performance difference among 1805, Rose, and Almond, but each has a perfectly balanced high-end fragrance. Most important, though, is that they are all top performers, in my book. Glad the T&H Almond working well for...

Re: Dad's old razor?

Appears to be a Wilkinson Sticky, a fine British DE razor. I note that you are located in England, and that increases the probability that your Dad used a Wilkinson -- a storied UK company. I'm sorry you disposed of it, but hopefully you can pick up another of the same model and use it in good healt...
