"The aggregate of concepts required to attain a passing grade for this course may be acquired through Twitter, Facebook, or Google. However, this being a graduate level course, you may find that tweeting, facing, or googling will prove insufficent in that respect. Therefore, yes, opening a boo...

How would you respond to thia student?

I have been a college professor for 13 years, and I thought I had heard everything. . . until today. I received an email from a student (a graduate student, no less!) who asked the following: "How important is it that I acquire the books required for your course?" I am still puzzled about ...

Chris,

It sounds like you stole my great grandad's "cough syrup" recipe.

p.s., If anyone in the Chicagoland is looking for it, I also saw a couple of bottles at Binny's, which is a liqour mart out in the burbs. They ran 40 dollars or so.

The King's Ginger

I stopped at a favorite brewpub last night, and the bartender was kind enough to let me sample a couple his favorites. I tried one that I had never even seen on the shelves. It's a rich and VERY gingery (hence the name) liqueur that, according to the bartender, is traditionally carried on foxhunts. ...

Tips on visiting Seoul?

All:

I found out that I'll likely be visiting Seoul, S. Korea, this summer for a professional conference. I've already picked up a few guidebooks, but I'm wondering if any of you have any tips, must-sees, etc. I'll be there for about a week in mid-July.

Thanks in advance,

Metal detecting & treasure hunting

I wish I were at the point in my life that I could give up the job and become a full-time beach comber, but I still need a real income for a few years. Anyway, for as long as can remember, I've wanted to take a crack at metal detecting on my trips to the beach or even along the river near where I li...

I've been enjoying Hop Stoopid from Lagunitas. Aslo, a buddy turned me on to Green Flash IPA on my last trip to California, and I stumbled across it (well, I guess "stumbled" is the wrong word in this context) at a local grocer.

My first World Series. . . and a bonus

It only took 47 years, but I finally saw my first WS game -- game 2 in St. Louis. Great pitching duel, great weather, great friend who took me along. But here's the bonus. My buddy bought a package that included the game and a hotel. We picked up the tickets and found that we had been upgraded to se...

I'd go along with Maltese Falcon as one of the best and generally enjoy the Hammett/Chandler generation of noir mystery/detective fiction. But the one mystery I enjoy reading time and again is A.A. Milne's "The Red House Mystery." In the end, I'm a sucker for the English murder-in the-coun...
