Now that you have some success to build on, make avoiding irritation your top priority, and let the shaves improve by experience rather than by force. I don't mind the stubble too much. I do experience minor skin irritation (not as much as last week). Just because I did not require the alum block t...

Right now, the MACH 3 is the only sure way to get BBS and right now, I miss that feeling.

A third pass is usually more than enough. I do two (or two and a half sometimes), and get pretty good shaves. Believe me, it was tempting to go for a fourth pass !! I had plenty of lather on the brush. This week I will observe how long it takes for my face to heal from the redness on my neck - beca...

Return to DE - Round 3

I took a pre-shower earlier this morning as more of a prep than anything. Then about an hour and a half later, I decided to give it a go. I started by replacing the blade because I wanted no excuses this time around. The pre-shave oil was standard procedure. The lather was also standard - felt very ...

Quick question:
  • How many hours of sleep do you get??
The more hours you sleep, the more skin layers are generated and thus might theoretically make you look more presentable.

Re: A winning Combo

I've beeen faceturbating for several minutes. Every time my wife walks by, she rubs my face, and shakes her head in disbelief. Most guys will not admit to faceturbating (sounds allot like, er, uh, nevermind ). Now be careful with your wife - she might want to borrow your razor if you get that...

Fish, 'Less irritation' is a much better and more useful goal at this point. Excellent. Make sure you keep the rounded part in contact with your skin, as per, that other thread. Short, light strokes. Hold the razor down near the end of the handle, and stretch the skin slightly with the free hand. E...

Fish, You're just not close yet, regarding technique with the DE. And just using it once a week, well, it's going to take some time....sigh. What Rufus describes in his initial post is the pretty standard comparison by someone who knows how to use a DE reasonably well. My experiance is similiar, on...

I think the Mach 3 would be a better razor if it had fewer blades, leaving everything else the same. The pivot seems better than the Sensor, and the mounting of the blade is foolproof, unlike the Sensor, where it's possible to install the blade upside down and hurt yourself. I can't even imagine sh...

Whatever you do, don't get obsessed with BBS right away. Work first on getting the blade angle and pressure right instead. If you worry about how smooth your face is right off the bat, you are likely to end up with lots and lots of niks and bleeders. So that is the big mistake I am making !! Got it...

You're doing something very basic and very simple that isn't right. I'm almost certain it's the razor's angle against your face. Is the rounded cap always touching your face? It should be. This coming Sunday I will try resting the rounded cap against my skin when I shave. I was just responding to a...

Wow, I have the exact opposite experience when comparing the MACH 3 to the Safety razor (Merkur Heavyweight). I only use my Merkur once a week because of all of the nicks and cuts - plus my entire skin is hot and irritated (to the touch). I can't justify practicing more than once a week to get bette...

So - once you get your routine down, you will want to fan out into other products. TOBS, GFT, etc. -- but the cream of the pasture has got to be Mitchell's Woolfat Soap. When you get really good with this stuff, your razor shaves without you even holding it.  I am pretty new to this -...

This type of post inspires me.

After I renovate my bathroom, I might start a small collection - something like that I would build a shelf for - must not be hidden behind a mirror door cabinet.

Just beautiful - I hope it serves you well with your future shaves. 8)

Fish, good technique is a product of experience which is learned from one's mistakes. Excellent words of wisdom, Squire. Those multi-blade pivot-head cartridge razors are incredibly easy to learn that when someone decides to step up to the next level, the steep learning curve can be quite a challen...

Re: Learning curve

How steep if the learning curve on using a D/E? I thinking of switching to a D/E and just wondered how many stipic sticks i'm gonna have to stock up on. I use an alum block and it works well. Be very careful not to get overconfident as that may lead you to a bloody mess (happened to me). If I may s...

From this (serious scraping irritation and lots of stubble left) I suspect that your razor angle was too steep when you shaved your neck. To fix that, keep the rounded head-piece of the razor in contact with your skin at all times. (On your neck, this takes practice and a little more skill. On your...

Is this the same person that said, why should I use a DE when I get great shaves with a mach 3? LOL.... Ahh another one gets hooked  Well Whistler, the cartridge prices are one reason to give the DE a try. When I produce my first video on shaving, which will focus primarily on technique using...
