Re: "Premier" razor?
My next project is to pick up a couple of stones and try to hone this thing on my own. I'll keep you updated on that process and how it shaves.

Re: "Premier" razor?
Well, I've finally finished - I've removed the hideous scales from the Premier razor, cleaned up and buffed the blade, and installed the scales from my JR Torrey. It's my first attempt at restoring a straight razor, and while it was a definite learning experience (i.e. I made a couple of mistakes) I...

The scales from the JR Torrey have a new home on my Premier blade! See viewtopic.php?f=18&t=57300

Re: J.R. Torrey 900 Razor
Unfortunately, the edge is bowed such that it cannot be honed (I specifically looked at the edge but evidently I didn't look closely enough). I'll be using the scales and pairing them with another blade. Will keep you updated.

Re: Where to buy straight razor pins?
Thanks Gary! I hadn't thought of Maggard's, and to make the shipping costs worthwhile I might have to buy some soap while I'm at it.

Where to buy straight razor pins?
Gents,
I'd like to try re-scaling a straight razor but I'm having a bit of trouble locating a vendor for pins. Any suggestions? (Canadian vendor preferred)
Thanks!

Re: Cologne/Aftershave of the Day
I recently purchased "88 Chestnut Street" [1] made by Chatillon Lux and is the aftershave that 4711 should have been. It's light, fresh, and disappears quickly so it's safe for me to use on a workday (we have scent restrictions in my office). I heartily recommend it. I'd recommend their Fo...

Re: "Premier" razor?
Thanks Chris, that's a good point about the tarnish following the scale contour. The razor is still in the antique shop but that'll change in the next day or so. As an aside: the JR Torrey razor that I was so happy to buy (my previous topic) evidently has such a bow in the blade that the honi...

Re: boars for soaps, synthetic/badger for cream?
This is purely subjective and likely for more nostalgic reasons than anything else, but when I use my straight razor on the weekends I always use a badger or boar brush with either Tabac or Haslinger soaps. During the week when I'm rushed for time I use my DE and whatever brush/soap combination happ...

Thanks for this info, John. I'm not sure that I need the Jumbo-sized styptic pencil but the "crystal deodorant" is a good tip.

Re: Nostalgic Shave
What a great shot! Such memories.
I have a similar photo with my oldest grandson, who is now 4 years old. When he and his little brother come over and he decides he needs a shave, he chooses what soap/cream he wants to use. (I won't let him near the highly-mentholated Glacial Obsidian, though.)

"Premier" razor?
Gents, Do any of you have experiences with a "Premier" razor? I found this in an antique store in town; the scales are as ugly as sin but I think the blade is worth re-scaling. Thanks in advance. Edit: Sorry, I forgot to mention that it says "Sheffield" on the other side of the s...

Re: SOTD: September 9 - September 15, 2019
I believe I read somewhere that due to a job related relocation the Mickey Lee folks are ceasing production of their shave soaps. It's too bad because they make a very fine soap. Hopefully, after they get settled, they will again produce their fine soaps. Oh no! I'll have to stock up on their Jeffe...

Re: In search of a good synthetic
While the SynBad is very soft and smooth, the Cashmere seems even softer. To be honest, the difference between styles of synthetic knots - from AP Shave Co, at least - is slight and very subjective. I find that I prefer a little bit of scritch so tend to use my boar and badger brushes about half the...

I have 4 or 5 synthetics from AP Shave Co; the SynBad (synthetic badger) and Cashmere are my favourites.

J.R. Torrey 900 Razor
Last weekend my lovely bride dragged me into in a candy-and-antique store in rural Alberta and a J.R. Torrey 900 straight razor caught my eye. It seemed to be in decent shape and the price was fair ($46CDN / $34USD) so naturally I bought it. IMG_1661.jpg IMG_1664.jpg The hinge pin was loose – easy t...

Re: Is Hard Water an Issue for You?
In my city our water averages 12.6 gpg (between 9.5 and 14 gpg if I recall correctly).
I've discovered that face lathering produces a better lather with MWF than bowl lathering, so I've quit grumbling.

Re: Do You Think Wet Shaving Could Be Trending in 2020?
I know it was nostalgia that brought me here. Me too. That, plus the fact that I was tired of having that damned electric contraption buzzing in my face every morning. I initially thought that I'd save money but when I factor in the cost of my soaps, brushes, and aftershaves, I think I'm actually w...

Re: 150 years? Really???
I like curing and smoking my own bacon but the cost of pork bellies has risen to eye-watering levels. It's far cheaper for me to buy a pork loin on sale than it is to get the much fattier - and you would presume cheaper - belly.

Re: I just got suspended fro Ebay!!!
Yeah I suppose. I work in a very large IT shop and I'm extremely suspicious of problems that go away on their own without an iron-clad explanation; they have a nasty habit of reappearing at the worst possible time.
It's a pity that eBay seem so tight-lipped about it.
