It would be interesting to see which company first thought of putting some menthol in there, and when. I've seen advertisements for Ingram's shaving cream from the mid to late 1920s. The selling point was cooling menthol, alleged to prevent razor burn. Interestingly, the Ingram packages made in Eng...

First - who won it? It was I. :D For less than the cost of one new Trumper's bowl. Thanks, Straight Arrow! Second - care to sell a puck? (If Rich recommends it, I'm up for trying it!) I'll think it over -- I want to see it first. It seems you can't open the package without destroying it, so I may j...

Hi Leon:

You say on your site that the Gibbs shaving cream provides a cooling effect. Does that mean is has menthol? Thanks.

I used to get little jars of it from Caswell-Massey in the late Nineties, but they stopped carrying it and I never found it anywhere else. I bought a few jars when they were discontinuing it and they'd already dried out -- maybe that was the reason they stopped selling it. It was very good to use in...

Well, just to bring this to closure, I stopped by today to see if there would be any after-Christmas sale, and the store is locked up and empty. A blog post from the local paper indicates they decided to close back in June. It was a bad year for retail. :-({|= http://blogs.knoxnews.com/harrington/20...

Adding chlorine to city water (which happened a hundred years ago) is the main reason we don't have cholera epidemics any more. It doesn't help the taste, but the tradeoff is well worth it.

Thanks, Rufust. Is Personna 74 the new Wilkinson LB? I don't know, I've never used them. :) They were a little before my time. Back in the late 70s I was a Wilkinson fan, but we all know they're not the same now. I figure if I don't care for the Personnas there is a ready resale market. And really, ...

The idea of using the same thing every day sounds horrible to me. Granted, some of the things I try are not that good and get set aside, later to be sold or given away. But I'm not an accumulator of multiples of the same product unless I use it frequently, and the amount of money involved is ...

It's pretty good, though fans of traditional English soaps might be disappointed. I had much better results with it using a stiff boar brush rather than badger. The lather is more slick than billowy. Moisturizing is above average.

I like it.

You might give Mitchell's Wool Fat shampoo a whirl. It's available from Shoebox Shave Shop.

I don't exactly have your problem but can say it is a good shampoo.

T&H Rose is one of my favorite creams - a great rose fragrance and a very lightly colored cream. Lanolite, I can't imagine T&H rose staining a brush, at least my pot -- the coloration is very faint. It surprised me as well. After all, the stuff is pink, not like American Beauty red rose. It...

I like the T&H Rose cream a lot, but I do detect a bit of pinkish discoloration on the brush. It might be a good idea to use it on a dark-bristled brush.

Is there a good site to get feedback on watch repairers -- and a general idea of reasonable prices for same? I have a 1960s LeCoultre Memovox, and have owned it for over 20 years. Every few years it needs servicing. It used to be possible to go to jewelry stores with a veteran watch repairer and get...

This is (almost) the original Barbasol product from the 1920s. (They changed the scent a few years ago.) Don't waste your time trying to lather it; it is intended to be used without a brush. I love it for its skin care in the winter months. :D Whether you like it depends on your needs -- I would not...

I actually like Seagram's. And no, I'm not an alcoholic. A lot of the more expensive gins such as Bombay Sapphire are just too floral. The Seagram's is neutral and mixes well. Tanqueray is okay but costly.

Amodex is good, and so is Inknix . You can also use a diswasher detergent containing chlorine bleach. Or just do as I do and keep the inky fingers as a badge of honor. :D Feathering has more to do with ink and paper than with the pen itself, although of course a "wet" nib is more susceptib...
