Re: What I learned in 7 years away from the shaving forums
3. Settling on a few shaving setups and sticking with them helps your shaves and wallets. This is, of course, not news to anyone here, but something very few of us can actually follow through on. The simplicity of just a few variables can help the quality and consistency of your shaves so much, it’...

Re: Liege Waffles
The pearl sugar wasn't really a big deal ... I ordered some online and it was reasonably inexpensive. Kneading it into the dough was also quite simple. As I mentioned the only problem was that I waited too long after kneading in the pearl sugar ... it mostly dissolved. Other than that, it was rather...

Liege Waffles
Made some Liege waffles the other day using this recipe. I deviated from the recipe by using some starter instead of commercial yeast. I made a stiff preferment and after it doubled in bulk I scooped out a generous tablespoon full and went forward with the recipe. The bulk fermentation was about 8 h...

Re: Royal Bank of Scotland: Sell Everything!!!
CNBC says a lot, much wrong. dorco is right, humans are poor predictors. Do your own homework and check on the success rate of alleged gurus. Those who got ONE right (by luck) will not tell you about the dozens of times they got it wrong. dorco? Is that an insult or a Fruedian slip? :) (actually, i...

Re: What are you reading?
Graduate Engineering students know a lot of technical stuff but are befuddled by the simple principle of shoving unburned bits into the coals and adding more wood. Just goes to show you the difference between thinking about it and doing it. Something that seems to be lost on most academics. Ah well...

Re: razor aggressiveness help
Don't forget there is no real way to measure the blade quality at the factory before packaging, . . . . Yes there is and yes they do Nic, DE blade manufacturing technology has been around for more than 100 years now and these people are not fools. Perhaps his point is that every attribute of the bl...

Re: razor aggressiveness help
normally the standard it very small. on most things the testing rate ends up beinf 1-2%. so basically 10 blades out of 2000 are pulled out for testing. and the funny thing is, they wont be random samples. random samples are almost unheard of. Could you elaborate? Do you think that random sampling i...

Re: Royal Bank of Scotland: Sell Everything!!!
Interesting. I'd heard a few bits in other venues but nothing like what RBS has stated. I suppose one should be a bit concerned, but not overly worried. 1. People suck a predicting anything. 2. Various talking heads were predicting the same thing in 2008 ... the economy was bad but not "great d...

Re: Bread Machine Panettone
We too have been fiddling with our bread machine in hopes of replacing store bought Panattone. So many of them are quite terrible, and the better ones cost a small fortune on the Prairies. What recipes have you tried? Have you looked at any of the recipes on The Fresh Loaf? For example, this one lo...

Re: lathering agents
Would be interesting to attempt to understand why he thinks a chelator is a "lather improver" Oy vey. The theory behind the use of chelating/sequestering agents, is that without them, hard water (high calcium) may hinder a soap's cleaning/lathering potential. Reference: http://chemwiki.uc...

Re: "Poverty meals"
They'd tell stories of using leaf lard because they couldn't afford butter. My dad grew up on a dairy farm in the 1930s. Two stories come to mind. First was about how my grandfather would eat straight lard ... usually with a sprinkle of sugar. The other was about how they would occasionally butcher...

Re: lathering agents
I assume that he considers chelators like EDTA and pentasodium pentetate to be "lather enhancers". If you add a chelator to a bad soap, you'll have a bad soap that doesn't make soap scum in hard water. If you add it to a good one, you'll have a good soap that doesn't make soap scum. It ma...

Re: milling and moisture
My question is, that even though any soap besides glycerin soaps can be milled as many times and desired, that the makers start out with good recipes, then why would they HAVE to add glycerin? You mentioned in another thread that you've made soap. So I'm going to assume that you understand eyebrigh...

Re: Suggestions sought: popcorn and popcorn oil
I like to use Alton Brown's paper bag method for making popcorn in the microwave. I saw your question about coconut oil - if I were you I'd skip it as much as possible (although it makes a good ingredient for shave soap, lol). This page is a fascinating read but pay particular attention to the table...
