One day I'll take inventory and show you all just how sick it is possible to be! For example, I have a lifetime supply of four different kinds of disposable blade, yet I shave with a straight razor. Sick, I tell you.

Glycerine or Skin Food on top is good too, as is the trick of pouring hot water into your mug to soften the surface for a couple of minutes before lathering.

Hi JBC - I can't answer most of your questions, but I can tell you that the Trac II came first. The main advance, as far as I can tell, that the Atra added to the Trac II was the pivoting head. In Europe, they marketed the Atra as the "Contour," which is what I bought in Portugal. The com...

I recall Andy_Sam who was one of the first users of the Feather AC (as well as inventor of the Featherjector) saying once that he drew his new AC blades across some wood (perhaps it was a matchstick) to dull them a little. The same technique is used by straight shavers as a substitute for back-honin...

Hinterhoeller? Always did want one of his Nonsuch series. I grew up as a dinghy sailor in the UK, back with a clinker built Merlin Rocket, later a Graduate and a British Moth. Used to get used as a crew in the Herons, Mirrors and Enterprises that were the mainstay of club dinghy sailing in 1960's Br...

If the orange/neroli scent of the Eau de Portugal grabs you, you might also consider Penhaligon's Castile.

There were numerous cutlers in Sheffield who made their own DE razors, either with a blade with slightly different cut outs to the Gillette, or using Gillette blades with a royalty paid to Gillette. This looks like a typical open comb of the period (open combs were far more popular in the UK at that...

Interesting indeed. The large acme thread is to move the plug and the small brass threaded rod is to prevent the plug from rotating uselessly within the barrel. It could easily be that the threads on the brass rod are binding on either the plug or the barrel and causing the lock ups. I'll forward th...

Well the Illinois 827 'linen', followed by its leather, followed by a few very light strokes on the Jemico red russian gave an excellent shave! None of the Feather-like rawness, and very close. I won't say (as a junior member on SRP did some years ago, that going once with the grain was as good as a...

That's interesting, Tony, and you are quite right that the unused side is smooth, except for the ridges pressed into it. Why would the manufacturer reverse the leather in this case? Did some barbers prefer this, or was it meant as an intermediate strop before using another made the usual way round? ...

Richard, I have the impression that my BK8 and BK12 are denser and stiffer than the BK4, which is airy and insubstantial on the face. Nonetheless, it actually works on soaps and some years ago I was known to trumpet that no one need buy any other brush. O tempora, o mores!
