Gillette blade thicknesses

I just received an Old Style Pocket Edition razor with a couple of the original three-hole blades. These blades are most definitely heavier than what we have today. I can loosen the razor almost 3/4 turn before it starts to get floppy. I won't be trying these blades as they are quite rusty but it d...

Gillette Red & Black

This razor was sold as the Red & Black Special for 50 cents in 1939. The metal case was covered in 'Texol' fabric. It was advertised as gold plated. Some of the razors in this case also had a knurled 'Brownie' style handle, the one with the knob on the end.

Thin Gillette Blade

These blades were made by Gillette circa 1938. There will be a date code on the blade itself. a letter and a number near the slot. H is 1937, I is 1938, etc. The number is the quarter of the year made. The same date code was used on some razors.

I have the same one, what year was this issued? I think this fancy handle design didn't show up until c. 1928 and this "Improved Ever-Ready" head design came out about the same time and continued into the early 1930s. They also came in gold-plate. There are similar GEM razors with the sam...

Durham-Duplex razors were very successful. Just search eBay and you will see a bunch. The company was started in New York City in 1908 by Thomas C. Durham and a successor company still exists in Sheffield, England as utility-blade manufacturer. The first patents were filed in 1906 and the razor desi...

Saving steel?

You are right about that! But frugal shavers wanted to refresh their blade by stropping on leather and to that end many stropper devices were sold -- see http://www.shaveworld.org/shaveworld_web/shave_encyclopedia.php?category=Stropper Below is a simple no-name blade holder for stropping SE blades. ...

You have a very nice gold-plated Gillette Brownie Tech, probably made just after WWII and before 1951. I have a similar one with a 1953 date code. My Grandfather used a straight razor and I have his shaving mug.

Old Ever-Ready and Gem SE razors

Strangely enough, these circa 1905 and later Ever-Ready and Gem razors used the same type of SE blade sold today, although the notches and slot were added c. 1930. It was an innovation that saved a lot of steel required by the Kampfe-type wedge blade. By 1919 Gem had merged wiith the American Safety...

Coincidence!

Last November I sold a similar set (but in sad shape) on eBay for $7.50. It was called a Shave-Pak and was an advertising give-away.

Re: The Travalong travel razor. A bit of Shaving History.

Thanks for your post and excelent pictures. I sold a Travalong on Ebay last year for $26.50 including shipping. You've got to be careful when you install the blade though! :?
There was also an unusual compact DE travel razor called the Eureka made in Switzerland and patented in 1919.
In Cold Blood has a scene, when the boys are in jail, of a guard putting a blade into, and screwing shut with his key, a prison-type razor. Very good movie too. Andre
That most likely was a 1960s era (the movie was out in 1967) Gillette one-piece 'institutional' razo...
