Not to move the thread in a disreputable direction, but this reminds me that the latin slang for the male generative organ was 'dum pendebat' - which was also a respectable phrase from the Stabat Mater.

More strops
I have always been a user of Jemico/Dovo strops. The plain models are good for pastes and the red russian has been my finishing strop. I recently acquired one of Tony Miller's red latigo strops and found it excellent. But it has set me off comparing strops not just for beauty, but for actual benefit...

Whilst the Nancy Boy online shop doesn't ship abroad anymore, anyone outside the US who has ordered from them in the past can contact Eric and plead their case. Provided you did pay any duty on your previous order, and didn't leave Nancy Boy to both pay the duty and fees plus pay for return shipment...

It's true that a pasted strop will delay the need for honing, and if done frequently enough a fine Swaty-style barber hone will keep the edge where it should be. There are aggressive metal-eating pastes available - Flexcut Gold will serve the purpose of a fairly coarse hone and quickly at that. It i...

Clive, The Hippocratic Oath has not been administered to UK medical graduates for decades. I believe it is still used in the US, no? I am not trying to say that such an oath or any other standard has to be respected by all, no matter what. I am saying that your rights and freedoms only extend to the...

physicians must aggressively respond to the needs of patients at the end of life. You mean stop in and say hello on the way to the opera? Sorry, Stan, but I'm ultra cynical today. Clive I'm sure you don't mean to begrudge me my three weekends a year when I leave town and do something I want to do. ...

The original scuttle was a broad lipped jug with a soap dish mounted on top. It was used in the days prior to piped hot water, and would be carried to a gentleman's dressing room with hot water in the jug. The brush could be fitted into the broad spout to soak, and then lather made on the soap cake ...

I always liked the BK handles both visually and also in the hand. It is strange how the BK4 whips up Trumpers soap isn't it? A very soft brush that might be good for dusting the soap, or tickling it when aggressive, yet it makes oodles of thick lather. Some combinations just synergise together and r...

Yukio, I wasn't fishing for complements, but thanks. Canada is all about landscapes...our architecture..well...isn't. A few months back I thought I spotted a photographic project in this vein. In the downtown area of Toronto there are a number of interesting buildings - some from the grand age of a...

Chris, I don't think you realized this when you posted it, but you just explained why owning and maintaining a straight isn't all that easy and cheap as it first seems. Not for the obsessive types (like myself), anyway. This explains why the honing forum on SRP is the busiest. If it was so darn eas...

Ilija, You're right about diamond paste. I've given up on it, and have stuck to CrO2 as my only paste - not so sharp but nicer on the skin. If you'll bear with me, I can go a stage further. Using an extremely fine hone upgrades the CrO2 finish just as much as CrO2 does over diamond. My chrome paste ...
