Drumana - the BS shop cream has been the product I have used more than anything else over the years. I've currently been experimenting with various others since discovering this forum, and am looking forward to going back to it for a compare sometime in the near future. Expectation is that it will m...

Has worked very well for me lathering in a bowl, in my hand, or on my face.

as for your pre shave oil, try a few shaves with and a few shaves without it and see if you really notice the effect of the oil. Steve - I agree. Currently not using the oil, and not noticing any significant difference as long as other prep is sufficient (shower, wash etc). I'm now looking for Crab...

Newbie reports in - T&H, Bodyshop, Taylors etc

Well, here's my first 'contributing' post (as opposed to pleas for help with shaving technique). Having begun to get the hang of DE shaving (by which I mean that using a DE is not a burdensome process by which it takes me longer, only to get a worse shave than with a Gillette cartridge!) I have now ...

Good morning one and all. To report back. I received my sampler pack on Saturday, and had my first test shave last night. Now, retrospectively, this is a rather disgracefully unscientific approach (especially given my former lab days!). I should of course have systmatically changed one thing at a ti...

gdc, Welcome. I would strongly urge you to re-read Marion's post. It is the voice of experiance in this matter. I will only add that, the reason you got a closer shave with the Bic is because the blade angle was already set for you, and is more or less correct. And the razor is so light that it is ...

gdc While I agree with others that your problem will be resolved by giving some attention to the angle at which you’re holding the razor, it hasn’t been mentioned that your choice of razor is probably not helping either…., a Merkur Open-Comb isn’t it? Merkurs Open-Comb is a design that really doesn...

Do blades vary in size, and therefore the extent to which they protrude from the enclosure of the safety razor?

I think you'll succeed with one or another of the blades in the sampler pack. Follow the recommendations above on getting the right blade angle and use light pressure after a good prep. It will come together in time. And welcome! Thanks! It was a previous post of yours where I found the links to th...

All - I am most impressed with your speedy responses, and patience given what I have now ascertained re sampler packs elsewhere on the forum. I have ordered one. nteeman - sentiments entirely understood, but (1) I'm too intrigued to give up just yet; and (2) I'm convinced that the traditional approa...

Disappointed with Merkur safety razor...

I have been an infrequent visitor to the fora for a while now, and, about 3 months ago decided to invest in some new equipment... Previously I had been using a Gillette Sensor, with Body Shop shaving cream and brush. I have wet shaved in the shower for years, after washing my face well etc. I purcha...
