Re: What's cooking?

Mmmmm.... cold smoked mackerel was my favourite.. sliced on a sandwich no less..... each slice almost transparent from the oil in the fish... it would drip if you were not careful..... Hot smoked (fish is actually cooked) was preferred by some.... By me, only when there wasn't cold smoked stuff arou...

Re: What's cooking?

"Smoked mackerel", a delicacy not to be found out on the bald faced prairies of Canada... but a staple food from where I grew up in Norway (both cold and hot smoked).

Dr. Moss, I'm jealous!

It's plated, either zinc or pot metal I'm afraid.

Re: Coffee and the grinding thereof

Roasting your own..... wow, I've never been THAT keen myself.... just too many variables for me. That said, it can be done in a hot air popcorn popper, or a roasting basket on a gas grill rotisserie, drum roasters... oh my.... it's NOT just about roasting. There is the issue of a roast profile, the ...

Re: Coffee and the grinding thereof

Clive, I would not do anything other than grind *fresh* beans, fresh. When I bought my first "cheap" Solis grinder and started buying my beans from my local roaster (Black Pearl Coffee), my wife thought I was nuts..... until she tasted her first cup.... no complaints since! Find a local ro...

Nice score Sam. =D> 22" is plenty big, if you think you are going to run out of space for a big crowd, rethink the menu! Thermopop? Just got an email today about them, looks very nice and should do just fine. Those Thermapen units are for those of us who have more money than brains! T...

Not to worry, Jason.

I just retired to make room for you! I have had my fill of bosses like yours.... the ones who think they know what is going on, only they don't have a clue.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll land on your feet and carry on.

Re: BBQ Grills and more specifically, Kamados

Sam, I think you are on the right track... a Weber kettle grill is a fine all around device. Yes, you have to play around a bit if you want to do 12 hr cooks, but for that once or twice a year... it's fine, and for the rest of the time, it's a great *grill*. Personally, I'm rather fond of the deluxe...

Re: Let's see some shave dens.

I don't use a computer. I only use a android phone galaxy note 3. So now what. Assuming you are using your phone (A note 3 IS a portable computer) to take the pictures, set your camera to something like 800 x 600 and you will have suitable sized pictures for posting on a discussion board. If you wi...

Looking for QED Essentials soaps....

I'm looking for new or partly used QED Essential soaps, in particular the Lavender, Tangerine & Spearmint as well as Grapefruit & Peppermint scents. I cannot remember what he had in Rose type scents, but those too would be of great interest. In fact, just about anything Charles made would be...

Re: supermax blades

Just to clarify, Supermax blades are made in India. I used them when I first started out DE shaving as they were available at a local store, but I was never particularly fond of them. There really is no *best* in wet shaving, only what you prefer, and part of the journey is figuring that out. We all...

Re: Opinions on small SUV's?

Nothing wrong with a CRV! I would have also suggested the Subaru, mostly because of a friends experience. His Subaru died in the middle of running some errands with his mother last winter, so he called a tow truck. He had to wait about 1/2hr before the tow truck showed up. Driver gets out, looks at ...

Re: Buying a 'pre-honed' straight razor

Both dealers I mentioned offer beginners kits, including a basic strop etc. and they also check and hone each and every razor they sell, so that you KNOW it's shave ready when you receive it. I would contact your dealer of choice and discuss what they can do for you. My personal view is that perhaps...

Re: Buying a 'pre-honed' straight razor

One place I know of in the UK is theinvisibleedge. They have an internet storefront and are well spoken of over at SRP. Straight Razor Designs is another great place, but they are located in the USA, so shipping costs could be an issue. There are many places to buy razors and many more that offer ho...

Mmmmmm..... booouuuurbon. A bottle of that stuff and I don't care what else is in the Panettone! I do not know why, but I've succumbed to the Jnat hysteria and chosen a hone that I will purchase shortly. I really should focus on Panettone instead, it's cheaper and much tastier. Thanks agai...

Re: Food Processors

I'll second the comments on the KA. I went with a Bosch Universal around 15 years ago. The stock bowl with beaters will whip a single egg white into stiff foam. I can also mix enough dough in the same bowl for 8 1.5lb loaves of bread. Our oven could only bake 6 x 1.5lb loaves of bread at a time, and...

Re: Bread Machine Panettone

Chris, We too have been fiddling with our bread machine in hopes of replacing store bought Panattone. So many of them are quite terrible, and the better ones cost a small fortune on the Prairies. Mrs. Zero and I got hooked on Panettone when one of my previous customers began to give me one each Chri...

He will be missed.

The help of keen eyed sleuths required

As has been posted before, there is this video of a straight razor shave at the Waldorf. I ask that you pay attention to the top shelf inside the left cabinet at 0:16 into the video. There is a chrome or perhaps nickel plated container in the centre of that shelf. My father, in his barbershop of day...
