I think she uses clay in the cream soap. Sometimes, you have to allow the brush and some water sit and soak on the dollop. This helps the clay absorb some water, and improve mixing the lather.

You can rub dish soap (e.g., Dawn) on the area that you don't want to get covered in steam. Just rub it on with a paper towel until it is clear and dry.

I usually leave the stick open (uncapped) until I'm done shaving. It is dry dry enough by then, so I cap it and put it back in the dopp for the next shave.
