Re: Barbershop professional shaving bar
It may be one of those soaps that works better if it is used frequently and not allowed to completely dry out. Also, I just noticed that "crater" on the top. Could it be intended to hold a little puddle of hot water to bloom it for a couple of minutes? Williams Mug has a similar crater fo...

Re: Creams or Soaps
For a long time I favoured soaps over creams, but more recently the ratio has become much more balanced. Part of the reason is that I currently use more Portuguese and Spanish shaving products, the majority of which is available only as shaving cream. (Before anyone mentions it; I consider shaving s...

Re: Nivea Moisturizing Shaving Cream in tubes - where did it go?
Can’t find it on the Shopper’s website, but that is more a function of their poor website design than anything else. #-o London Drugs out West and Loblaws in the East still list the blue Nivea Protect & Care shaving cream and the Canadian Nivea website shows it as well. So it still seems to be a...

Re: Musgo Real soap
The Classic Scent Musgo Real shaving soap is still shown on the manufacturer’s (Claus Porto) website. So it still seems to be available. After years of believing the bad press, I had bought the hard shaving soap about 3 or 4 years ago and found that it was much better than the reviews made you belie...

Re: Gokumyo 20k
Had a discussion - if that’s what one wants to call it - on a different forum with a member who was enraged that I dared to suggest that in my opinion factory-fresh Dovos are not quite shave ready. Less than 6 months on that forum and who were other members, including me, to disagree with his weight...

Re: Gokumyo 20k
I use the Gokumyo 20k after the Naniwa 12k and am glad I have it. The stone feels different to my range of Naniwas, but it does an exceptional job. When the Gokumyo arrived silly me experimented whether I could reduce or even eliminate the CrOx stropping afterwards, but since I have started to go th...

Be an optimist; maybe he's now moved on to straight razors and uses them daily....ShadowsDad wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2019 5:36 am 3 years later I strongly suspect that it's over and done with. Either that or the child now sports a wimpy beard.

Re: Shavemac in synthetic game...better late than never?
Just an update. After the initial period, when I used these two Shavemac synthetics almost exclusively in preparation for my review, I had expected to go back fairly soon to my usual rotation that heavily favours silvertips, but somehow I just kept going with these two Shavemacs and have hardly used...

Re: Starting over with an open blade
This should become an interesting journey. Frustrating a bit in the beginning, but perseverance will pay off, after a while you will hopefully agree that it was worth the efforts, and after some big discoveries in the beginning you will eventually come to the point where discoveries become smaller a...

Re: Williams Mug Shaving Soap is still horrible
At the risk of digressing: So many times have I heard, or have I thought to myself, how agreeable the old-fashioned soapy Williams scent is that it is really surprising that no soap maker (e.g. Haslinger) ever seems to have thought of producing a similarly smelling and sized shaving soap that works...

Re: Shavemac in synthetic game...better late than never?
Brutus, like you I consider the Muehle synthetics the pinnacle for synths. I used my EJ (same fibers/knot) for 5 years almost exclusively and have another of the same in a custom handle. I would love your feedback on these Shavemac fibers whenever you get a chance. Hello Tim, sorry for the delay, b...

Re: Shavemac - fan vs. flat vs. bulb
In my case, Shavemac fans are in the minority (only one in my stable), but I have two two-band Shavemac bulbs. I have no experience with Shavemac flat brush heads, as face-latherer I don’t find the flat top ergonomically appealing as it does not lend itself to the painting wrist movement that I use....

Re: New Gillette Razor - guess how many blades?
I'm somewhat tempted to try it. My previous favorites have been the Mach 3 and the Guard, and this one is somewhat in between those two. I'm wondering, though, what kind of limit there is on the closeness of the shave. Yes, I too get that sometimes, as Gillette propaganda makes the claimed improvem...

Re: Shavemac in synthetic game...better late than never?
Excellent! I can't wait to hear your report. What size knot did you get? Bulb or fan? There’s a 26 mm bulb on the way, and a 28 mm fan on order, but not dispatched yet. I travel regularly and need a sturdy brush to take along. And they are not overly expensive. (At least that’s my excuse. 8) - What...

Re: Shavemac in synthetic game...better late than never?
Yes, mine was shipped on the March 8th and should be here pretty soon if it is not held up in Customs. I am curious to find out whether it is an improvement over Mühle Silvertip Fibres that have been my benchmark in synthtic brushes so far. When I asked whether Shavemac might be using the same fibre...

Re: Damascus for a straight razor?
As far as my two Damascus Livis go, they are certainly unique, made to order with more manual work than other razors that I own, but they are also among my least impressive shaving instruments. As someone who looks at a straight razor most and foremost as a shaving tool that needs to do a job, these...

Re: eBay Sales Tax
But couldn't that make total VAT payments on an item eventually total more than the original value of the item? It's similar in the USA to selling a car. When you buy a new car, part of the cost in most states is sales tax. Then, if you sell the car privately, the buyer pays sales tax again. And if...
