Re: Muhle R41 vs Merkur Futur
I own both, but use primarily straights. My Futur is more than 12 years old and I bought my R41 (2013 model) much later to take along on those trips where a straight razor is just not convenient. Recently I had brought the Futur out of semi-retirement to compare it against the Chinese Future clone t...

Re: chin - problem with grain direction
I believe straight shaving is always a work in progress and even after years of straight shaving I sometimes come up with a new tweak that I try. Even if the age of great discoveries and progress in straight shaving may be over for me, I still find from time to time a minor tweak that works better f...

Re: Is/Was the Merkur Futur Made of Stainless Steel
As per various descriptions the Futur of it is made of brass, but some head parts could be casted from Zamak, and the entire razor is plated in satin matte, chrome, or gold. My two Futurs (one at home, one overseas) are satin matte, which gives me a good grip at all times. Unlike the picture shown i...

Re: Horse hair brush
Experimented with various Vie-Long horse brushes for a while, but ultimately found that they were not for me and that I prefer badger, synthetic, or boar brushes over horse. Historically, horse brushes were associated with anthrax in WWI and I thought I play it safe and buy a brush from a manufactur...

Re: Horse Hair vs. Boar Hair
Some time ago,I experimented with Vie-Long horse brushes, but determined after a while that they were not for me. Neither the feel nor the initial smelll were the problem, but horse hair has apparently a known tendency to knot and out several brushes I tried the majority (white horse hair seemed to ...

Re: Suggest a good solid quality DE razor
If you are looking for a more aggressive razor, I suggest the Mühle R41 open (Mühle calls it technically more correct "tooth") comb razors. The basic model is the R41 that has been widely discussed, but you can buy other variants with different handles that all have a their own part number...

Re: Shaving Brush Options?
Take a look at the various synthetic brushs offered by several vendors. They are a fine alternative to badger and also much cheaper. +1 After all these years, and owning some of the pricier Shavemac, Thäter and British made silvertips, I can still say that a Mühle Silvertip Fibre® synthetic brush w...

Re: Review - Ingram Shaving Cream (UK)
Quite some time ago, I bought some Ingram shaving cream on a trip to the UK and was quite pleased with it. Never got around to buy a second tube though and my memory has become somewhat hazy and for a moment I even thought it was called Ingram's shaving cream . Since then, my UK trips have become fe...

Re: Review - Palmolive Shaving Cream
Palmolive cream is goood value and I clearly prefer it over much touted Proraso products. In many European countries, Palmolive cream is inexpensive, available in most drugstores, and I often make it a point to pick some up when I travel there. The packaging can be confusing though. In Germany/Austr...

Re: L'Occitane Shaving Soap (Cade)
The OP bought obviously the refill, there is also the already mentioned aluminium shaving bowl for the soap available. Quite nice, but the aluminium tends to oxidize and looses its shiny appearance. The company established in 1976 is not Paris based, they are based in the South of France in Manosque...

Re: What soaps are still good?
I would like to add two observations regarding soaps: (1) Water quality. How well or bad a soap performs has much to do with the local water (e.g. hardness) that the shaver finds available. Some soaps seem to perform well with a wide range of water qualities, some are more critical and while I have ...

Re: What soaps are still good?
Agree on Valobra, but the shaving stick has apparently been discontinued and is being replaced by Valobra (hard) shaving soaps in four scents (neutral, patchouli, cologne, and fougère). As far as traditional English shaving soaps are concerned; besides Mitchell's Wool Fat, D.R. Harris soaps are stil...

Re: martin de candre (rose)
Now I understand why MdC no longer sells it. No more --- On the Martin De Candre website it was always listed as a 2016 Christmas special edition. As I don't care much for rose, I felt never compelled to buy a tub, but as far as the other Martin De Candre shaving soaps go, I quite like them and the...

Re: It Keeps On Getting Better
I'm still not happy with that mammoth-ivory scaled Livi. I had to use pasted strops on it, twice, before it actually shaved, and even then it wasn't sharp and left me feeling sore. I think I'll have to go all the way back to the coarse hones and progress it again right through them. I enjoy my Livi...

It's made in the Netherlands by the same maker of Tabac soap... Considering that the back of the Tabac Original shaving soap refill says "Made in Germany", I find above statement hard to believe. http://www.maggardrazors.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Tabac-Shaving-Soap-Refill-2.jpg (Phot...

Sinks are cesspools of bacteria: http://education.seattlepi.com/types-bacteria-found-wet-sinks-4325.html I use running water to rinse the razor during and after a shave, but by turning it on & off for just the amount needed. I would never fill up a sink and use the water as it's as filthy as a ...
