Gary, Not yet, I was thinking of doing it today. I guess I might go for a 5/8 instead of my original 4/8. Just like fly fishing, may as well start at the norm and work your way to the spectrum ends. Still leaning toward the Boker Micarta though. Last I looked the 5/8's were out of stock most places....

Hi Tom I see that you mentioned that you own a Spyderco UF aka ultrafine. The stone is very fine much finer than 2000 grit and so is the Fine that is just under it. So its quite capable of keeping a razor shave ready. Do a forum search and you will find several post about it. I personally use it as...

Will do Gary, so far I was watching some of the youtube video's by mr Abrams on what to look for re spine wear, rust, nicks, cracked scales, loose pins, etc. I also watched his honing and stropping videos. I'm guessing a strop and paste are better for a beginner than the honing route as long as the ...

Thanks guys. The boker razors I mentioned are the new production they're making and cost $139 and $129 I kind of thought new would be better than a pig in a poke used one without the experience under my belt. Then again i could cruise the antique stores and look for a usable old one. Apparently the ...

I had a bowl my mother gave me for soup. I never thought much about it for years and it sat in the back of the cupboard. Early in my wetshaving life I got a shaving mug but couldn't stand the restriction of the narrow coffee mug style. For some reason that bowl popped into my head and it is near per...

Thinking of jumping into the straight razor game.....
I've been recently thinking of jumping into the straight razor game. I've been a DE wet shaver for a few years and am enjoying my shaves but I want to try a straight. I've been looking at the Boker Tree Brand 5/8 brown micarta and the smaller 4/8 Green Micarta razors. I've read that the old bokers w...

Born in 1969. I started with a Wilkinson sword disposable if my memory serves me correct. They were a grey color if memory serves me right. My first non disposable was a Gillette Sensor I think was a stocking stuffer when I was in high school, probably around 85 or 86. I used that until my step fath...

I have to wonder how many worn copies of the FOXFIRE books sit on artisan soapmaker shelves? Last year my mother gave me a nicley boxed set of 3 soaps she got I thought she said she got at a craft fair. She had this woodsy theme going and the soaps were pine scented. They were labeled as Peppermint...

I like the stuff. It was my first WH that wasn't store brand basic. I like it in the winter, I find it prevents my skin from drying out versus using a alcohol based aftershave when the winter furnace heat is already drying my skin out. Scent is quite pleasant. I really don't plan to go back to basic...

Damn, I was hoping this was being brought to us by the William's Mug Soap folks. I see williams (Mug Shaving Soap) all over and hoped to see a nice tube cream commonly available on local shelves. Coincidentally I've had a cake of Williams for a long time and just started shaving with it. This cheap ...

Well I've never tried a fat boy. My previous cartridge razor was an all metal Atra that was my step father's razor, I gave it to him for christmas one year in a boxed kit with a brush that had it's own cream. The Atra's handle was long and had good heft and balance. When he passed I kept the razor a...

I have a merkur HD with a bar and an Ikon classic with a comb. In practical use I feel no difference on my face from the comb. The open comb just rinses faster and sometimes if my angle gets off leaves funny comb marks in the lather. I guess some of the old open combs especially the brass ones if dr...

Speick in general left me underwhelmed. I tried it and was underwhelmed. The scent is a bit off for me but tolerable. The lather was only ok. It may sound ludicrous but I like inexpensive green proraso much better. Always lathers well so I'll have to disagree with the original post. I'm a bit short...
