Re: Free AOS tallow shaving
Yes, there is a definite bentonite blunting of the scent in those old AoS soaps, but I rather like it.

If you want to combine freshness with ease of use, you should look at a "superautomatica" type of machine. I've worn out two Saeco/Philips Vienna machines over the years and I'm now working on a Philips 2200 as the Vienna is no longer made. They don't cost much more than a manual machine, ...

Re: Straight razor vs DE razor...
As well as the shave being perfect and longer lasting than a safety razor shave, there's the satisfaction, which cannot be matched.

Re: Is SMF losing its vigour?
Why would someone pay thousands of dollars over the months and years and never bother to post in his own operation. Hundreds of guys have followed his very glaring example and quit posting. The truth is that he is NOT paying for "us". He is paying for something, but clearly not for any of...

Glad you're enjoying it, Gary. Soccer (we just called it 'football') is a winter season game in the UK, along with rugby and field hockey: summer is for cricket and athletics. So I have many memories of shivering on muddy pitches, breaking the ice on puddles. It immunized me against further interest!

I didn't know C&E had swapped to standard Creighton's containers: my Sweet Almond is all in the brown glass bottles. It's a great scent and a good performer too. Someone should snap it up as it is long gone.

Re: Straight razor vs DE razor...
I might be biased, but I'd put it this way: a DE is an easy way to get a very good and close shave, but a straight can do even better IF you have your honing skills perfected, technique perfected, and an excellent chunk of steel. I am sure most straight shavers don't get near a DE shave (I'd be shot...

Re: Royall Lyme
It's always interesting to compare new bottles with old, not for formulation changes, but for how aging once opened and exposed to air and sunlight change the scent. I don't notice them getting weaker or altering their character, until I open a new bottle and find it rather different to the just-fin...

Re: Simpson Brushes History
It would be nice to see it once it has bloomed, too. Gary: they aren't magical, but they are good. QC is solid now Vulfix is in charge, but as with brushes everywhere, the quality of hair is not what it once was. Young farmed badgers can't compare with mature old badgers. And I think we know that th...

Re: simpson's have improved
It's true that there was a time when the Best hair in their more expensive brushes was better than any finest or silvertip. This was true for Chubby 2 and 3, and for the Duke 3, and maybe others I don't know of. The smaller brushes tended to a have brown-tipped hair, and the larger was cream-tipped....

A visit to the past
A couple of days ago I melted some Colonel Conk glycerine soap in a mug, two pucks of bay rum and one of lime. The soaps were 20 years old and had changed colour but they still smell as good as I remember. Not exactly the thickest lather—it was plentiful but not as stiff as one likes. No matter, I j...
