2nd-generation Tradere safety bar razor

Gentlemen: I have a second-generation Tradere safety bar razor on the way to me (in transit even as I type this). I bought a first-generation handle a long time ago (when they first came out) and I use it with a FaTip head, a Tech head, and a Stahly head. I really love the original handle. Finally t...

Re: Minimalist DE razors

Jarmo, that razor is essentially identical to what most people call a British Tech. It is considerably milder than the pre-war American/Canadian Tech. The aggression level on that Tech would be pretty much the same as the post-war Techs with the non-triangular cut-outs, but due to the light weight o...

Re: New Penhaligon's Scent coming

Sounds like it might be interesting were it not for the base of cedar and sandalwood. I'm quite allergic to cedar and a little bit allergic to sandalwood.

I just wish that cologne manufacturers could figure out a way to make a scent that doesn't have a damned cedar/sadalwood base!

Re: Best Trac II blades in production

Personna Trac II is the one that Walmart used to stock and I purchased quite a few of them but have used most of them now. Guess that a search for someplace else to buy them around here is needed. It is a great razor to travel with when you do not want to worry about airport security or TSA agents ...

Re: Huge News:Re-Reformulated Penhaligon's Soaps

Craig,

I participated in the thread over at B&B; it is clear that the formula has changed slightly, but the first seven ingredients are identical. This leaves me awaiting experiential evidence that the "reformulation of the reformulation" is actually superior to the reformulation.

Re: The REAL Wilkinson !!

I had a chance to try the Brazilian Gillette SuperThins once, and I really liked those blades a lot.

We need to find a North American supplier for Brazilian blades.

Oldtrout, that is very kind of you. I'd be happy to accept a puck as a gift, and I will post a detailed review once I have had a chance to use it a few times. I sent a PM with my mailing address. By the way, I'm allergic to cedar and juniper, so if you have a puck that does not contain those scents...

Re: Minimalist DE razors

I like the old Tech, for me it's a bit mild but I suspect that's the blade exposure. It's not as mild as the new Techs. I have a Canadian Tech with the triangular holes that is quite efficient; seems to be even slightly more aggressive than my American-made triangular-slot Tech. Could be my imagina...

Re: Minimalist DE razors

I'm with Squire.

A three-piece is minimalist and functional. The best choice, in my opinion, is a vintage pre-war Tech (the one with the triangular cutouts in the baseplate). A fine razor and a fine shave.

T&H Rose or Penhaligon's Endymion cream?

Gentlemen, I have gravitated toward soaps to such an extent that I currently own no creams whatsoever. In the past I went through a tub of Trumper's Lime and enjoyed it very much. Currently I am thinking of adding just one cream to my software stash. Of the thread title choices, which would you choo...

Re: Barrister & Mann

I've heard a lot of good things about this soap. I'm glad you like it. Reading through the ingredients and their explanations there is just one thing that I want to correct. Coconut oil is definitely moisturizing, but saponified coconut oil is actually one of the most drying ingredients a soap can h...

Re: Comment on using up products

I'm currently down to a total of three soaps, two of which are pretty close to gone (big bare patch in the middle of each).

I plan on buying new product when both of the nearly gone soaps are totally gone, and not before.

Re: The REAL Wilkinson !!

It seems a lot of people don't the "WalMart Wilkies" that are made in Germany, but I think they're not too bad. I definitely think they're every bit as good as an Astra SP, which, for some reason I don't quite understand, gets a lot of praise. If you had somebody put an Astra in one fat-ha...

Re: Any 2013 or 2011 R41 devotees?

I had my Progress set about 4+, and it was too harsh for me, just like the 2011 R41 was. I was able to find a sweet spot with the Progress at about 3 or 3 1/2, and it seems just about right and without the raw harshness. I'd say it's on the sharp side of smooth, if that makes any sense. Kind of lik...

Re: Rolling My Own

Interesting observation that two pucks of soap that are identical excepting the scent can lather differently. I was pretty sure I had observed that same phenomenon in a couple of Mystic Water soaps; specifically, I was sure that the Adirondack Jack scent lathered better than lavender scented puck. I...

Re: THE TOTALLY SUPER-BEST INCREDIBLY FANTASTIC AFTER-SHAVE

I am quite enamored of the Queen Charlotte Soaps aftershave balms. I believe they fit all of your conditions pretty well. I also like Saint Charles Shave's aftershaves a great deal; Nutriment is one that you might really enjoy. It is priced reasonably, and you can pick up samples (that will last a c...

Re: Any 2013 or 2011 R41 devotees?

vferdman, I've never tried the R11, but I, too, generally prefer razors that bend the blade considerably. It almost seems like the more they bend it, the better it feels. I'm guessing it's because it provides stiffness to the blade, which prevents it from vibrating too much (which is what I suspect ...

lavender, believe it or not. Lime-lavender is a wonderful scent.

A lot of people pair lime with basil, too.

Re: Make Shave Soap...Make Shave Cream?

You can make shaving cream, but if you make cream instead of soap you have to start adding preservatives. A soap will last quite some time without going rancid, even without them, but a cream would be problematic.
