Re: What Did You Hone Today?

There seem to be lots of different blade shapes - I couldn't begin to understand all the nomenclature.

But that Dovo is very pretty to me. My eye seems drawn to a slimmer shape, and rounded corners.

Changing the grain pattern?

Been pondering this for a while.... We know that there are charts about the direction our beards grow ... and grain. With the grain, across the grain and against the grain. My question - is it even remotely possible to shift the direction of our beard growth? Make across shift to against, or with? I...

Re: What Did You Hone Today?

Have you ever shaved yourself with a straight razor? I don't want you to cut yourself, but if you ever want to learn, I can likely help with a properly sharp blade. Several years ago an SMF member, Jack (another lost contributor) started a thread about using a hair cutter, in the shape of a straigh...

Re: What Did You Hone Today?

And being quite unable to help myself, I honed the two Wapis from the exquisite blue velvet case as well. The edges feel amazing. Dr Moss - your descriptions of all these razors really makes me yearn to experience the sensation. A couple of years ago I yielded to the temptation of a "barber&qu...

That would be like rebatching soap.
Ah - thanks for the help!

Re: New Hearing Aids - 4 Years On

I am resurrecting this old thread because today I had another hearing test and got my first pair of hearing aids. These are a middle of the road pair - and I got them precisely because they have some tinnitus abatement designed into them. I have to say - on one hand my voice sounds like it does when...

Re: How good were the last American-made Schick injector blades?

I bought an injector from an SMF member several years ago. Since then I have bought Schick Platinum blades, the Chinese version, and a 20-blade cartridge that were specially treated somehow (but I don't remember the particulars ... cryo maybe?). I did like the Platinum version the best - but my pers...

Re: Guns

The orange pair they gave us at the range, in one year, it did not stay in. The free ones at our local range are too firm - they don't fit me well, prone to falling out, too. The link DR. Moss provided is for some nice ones, and the "roll/squeeze" works great with them. Also - +1 on the e...

Re: Sudoku anyone?

I like working the puzzles a lot. I found a couple of apps - and I do the easy ones when I want to let my mind wander. The medium's and hard's require me to put little number in the boxes too much (if you do these you understand that). I find that often times what does NOT go in the box is as import...

Re: Guns

Sorry to hear about the issues, sorry about the loss. I have done a few Neighborhood Watch meetings with our local PD Chief. I found out what the ammo of choice was for our local PD - there is a school of thought that says using what they use can't be wrong. Here in Buda they use Federal HST, +P (th...

Not as deep as Brian, but pretty immersed myself. Interested in the Shield EZ in 9. My Shield carry piece is nice, but that slide action is nice. Plus the grip has been redesigned, and it fits my had better. I also just bought a new piece - mainly because I have a ton of ammo I inherited from my dad...

Re: Fountain Pens

Montblancs are beautiful works of art ...... like a vintage razor from you birth year when you are 50 or over. :D I like the looks of the Montblanc ... at the Atlanta airport in the "E" terminal there is a Montblanc store - ink and fountain pens galore. Quite pricey, though -- I always wo...

Re: Joke of the Day

Talking bird joke... Man goes to the pet shop - asks for the most exotic pet in the shop. Attendant says: "This parrot speaks 5 languages." Man converses with the bird as a test - marvels at the skills - buys the bird and asks to have it delivered. Man gets home that evening - asks what's ...

Re: Dovo/Merkur misfortune

This is quite upsetting. The fallout from all this is going to be loss of life, coupled with the failure of companies and small business people everywhere. My wife and I are real estate agents here in Austin. Our last closing (read that as income) was in late February. Can't do open houses, very few...

PM sent.

Re: RIP Kirk Douglas

I heard two things on the radio today about Mr. Douglas:

1) He was instrumental in helping break up Hollywood's "Blacklist" era
2) Survived by his wife of 65 years!

Rest easy Mr. Douglas.

Re: Kirks Castille, Yardley and Mitchell's Wool Fat

Sam - I tried Kirks a few years ago, and liked it. In a thread way back then someone on our forum said that the amount of coconut in the soap made it too drying, and didn't recommend it for face use. I also bought Mitchell's and used it in the shower. I really liked it. In the shower it won't last a...
