Greetings Chris! I dearly miss the short-lived but truly wonderful Portra 25. (Insert heavy sigh here.)

My vintage seventies #24 Plisson HMW set in plexi shown next to an ivory handled Chubby 3. You want a big brush? Accept no substitutes.

Re: Is Plisson still in the hunt?

Probably a similar thing happened to brushes as with razors. The price of used fat boys and the like has declined now that there are endless boutique brands of razor to choose from. I still enjoy my old horn handled Plisson HMW 2 band. The handle has a few cracks (horn is no t a practical material ...

Re: Is Plisson still in the hunt?

While he has very little to add that is new, Buzz does check in from time to time! I still use my enormous Plisson HMW set in plexi every day. If you ask me, it is the finest shaving brush ever created. Unfortunately, Plisson has been unable to source that quality badger since the early eighties...y...

Re: Why buy Simpsons brushes?

One buys Simpson brushes for the simple reason that when Plisson ceased making the vintage HMW brush set in plexiglass, every other brush manufactured moved up one notch.

I've used the same brush every day for a couple of decades. When it works (and is exceptionally well made) it works!

Re: GIANT new Plissoft synthetic shaving brush

I was curious as to how the Razorock Hulk (synthetic) compares in dimension to the giant HMW(white collar instead of black) Plisson Plexi (badger): A plexi mounted Plisson with a white collar is filled with what Plisson called "European White" as opposed to "High Mountain White"...

What is Lillett? If you wish to make a Vesper that resembles closely the original, substitute Cochi Americano (white, not red) for the Lillet. The Lillet on offer today is not at all like the version sold in the "olden days," the re-formulted Lillet has had the quinine eliminated and is n...

Re: Looking For The Old Timers

I didn't sign on until the autumn of 2006, so I am almost an old timer. I am fortunate to have been well stocked and well served throughout my wet shaving career from about 1970. Many venerable shops have closed over the past ten years, but my local source, Colonial Drug, has moved a few miles but r...

Beard? Yes. Smaller brush? Nope. I use a #24 Plisson which has a 32 mm caliber knot where it enters the handle. It is enormous.

A few tips... -- Purchase fresh roasted beans and keep them in your freezer, they should be good for two weeks. -- Grind your beans just before brewing, but do not grind them too fine ...you should experiment. -- Your water should be about 185-190 degrees F, not boiling . -- Pour the heated water ov...

Re: French Press coffee maker

While they no longer offer the old rhodium plated frames, Bodum still makes the almost same old French press coffee maker. That's what I use. I would avoid decorator models. If you still have the nylon filter that came with your old unit, save it; Bodum no longer puts it in the kit nor has it as an ...

Nic, there is probably a misconception that a premium boar is expensive.
Well, a large (#20-24) vintage (1970-1982), NOS, Plisson HMW set in plexiglass will cost you about US$2,000. If you can find one. Depends upon what one considers expensive.
