newbie beard type suggestions.

Ok, so we've got shaving all taken care of but what about that hair and the rest of your face? Get the low down on shampoo's, conditioners, finishers, cleansers, toners and moisturizers right here!

newbie beard type suggestions.

Post by saucy_jack »

i've grown out a nice thick beard, the problem I'm having is that the hair of my beard is rather wiry and not straight at all, so i find myself constantly having to comb it.
is there anyone out there with the same beard type and have you been able to tame it?
are there any products i could use to keep it somewhat in place?

Strange question for a forum entitled "Shave My Face". Sorry, but, as I've never grown a beard or moustache, I can't help.

Jack, welcome aboard. There are in fact several bearded gentlemen in this forum. I think you will get some ideas from them soon.

Jack,

First, welcome to the forum.

Second, we are a "Shaving Forum".

Don't take this wrong, but if you want to know how to maintain a beard, maybe you should find a forum that specialises in beards.

If you want to know how to shave a beard, "Dude just ask away".

Either way, "Enjoy your shave."

Hi Jack -

I'm one of the very few bearded members here, as I only actually shave my neck and do a little clean-up on the cheeks.

I've worn a beard since 1972, and for the first few years I didn't shave at all. After 5 - 6 years I added the element of shaving that I mentioned above. I wore my beard quite bushy in the earlier years, after which I have trimmed it shorter and shorter.

My beard is also pretty curly, and I have never found a way to totally tame it. I've always had to comb it and trim the loose ends. And since there are always loose ends, I snip the strays just before I go anywhere. Wearing the beard shorter reduces the effect a little bit, but not altogether.

At this point, I really can't see myself without a beard, as it has become such a part of me. I also think most men look good with some facial hair, though I am largely alone in that sentiment around here. :)

Feel free to send me a private message/PM if you like. Otherwise, this board will be most helpful with any shaving you want to do around that beard.

I agree. I think many of us (not me) have beards in some form or other.

Jack, I moved your thread here as this seemed the most appropriate sub-forum. I've had a goatee for many years and have to frequently comb it and tidy it up. It's just the way beards are I think. Welocme to SMF.

I did grow a beard (full) at one time, and enjoyed it. I remember the day I shaved it off also, even though its been few decades. It's almost like watching a video, surprisingly. I stood in front of the medicine cabinet mirror with a new blade loaded in my Schick Krona and a can of shaving cream, and it took a number of passes, many rinses of the razor, and the result was just about as refreshing as any other shave I've ever given myself. I have enjoyed the art of the shave for as long as I've been shaving. Never in a million years would I have foreseen myself sitting here typing this recollection of that specific shave for other guys to read and react to. But here we are!

saucy jack,

Welcome to the forum

My friend has a beard, and I think he mentioned taming it with small amounts of vaseline and combing it through...? It's a trick he picked up from his father, who has worn a beard since he was 17. There should be some kind of beard wax or something out there as I'm sure this is a fairly common issue with bearded gents...

BTW, if you hang around here long enough you'll probably start shaving. No one here would blame you...

And of course, as Murray has pointed out, even a full beard needs to be shaved around the edges, on the neck and cheeks. Unless, that is, one wants to look like a werewolf or a homeless person.

I grew my beard in the military in Alaska. I ignored the mantra it added little warmth and was actually a hygiene problem.
they were right and I shaved the thing off.

Unless you know Edward Scissorhands resign yourself to high maintenance.

I've worn a moustache for 35+ years (with just occasional times when I shaved it off for very brief periods).

As you say, it becomes part of you.

My 'stache grows very thickly, and straight. Maintenance is limited to straight-line trimming along my lip-line. No problems.

At times, I've grown a beard. It was always very Grizzly Adams -- i.e., ridiculously thick and bushy -- a maintenance nighmare. It felt like a constant battle with a hedge that wants to take over the garden!

In other words, I find moustache maintenance to be a breeze; but beard maintenance was a right royal drag. Maybe I'd grow a goatee; otherwise . . . fuggedabout it!. (For me personally, as always, YMMV).

I could have written the same post, BeatlesFan. There's yet another factor for men of our age to consider. The more gray hair that shows, the older we look. A man may wear a gray moustache, but he's not a graybeard unless he grows one.

I'm a greybeard then. Sometimes I wear it full and only shave neck and upper cheeks, & sometimes lower lip. Currently wearing a van dyke, after a couple months of muttonchops & handlebar moustache! I'm an actor & the style is known to change w/ the part. Only clean shaven 2x in 30 yrs. Both times to play John Adams. To play Adams was worth looking like a big baby!
For your question, keep on combing!

You could experiment with different beard lengths. For the times when I have a beard, I recently bought a $12 Wahl battery powered beard clipper with a bunch of attachments. If you go that route, I highly recommend using rechargeable batteries.
