My wife just returned from a little trip to Syria and Lebanon. The scent of these soaps is very strong and rather nice:
The green soap in the pink box simply says 'rose oil' where the brown soap says 'laurel oil.' I doubt if it is real attar of roses, given that the price was just a few dollars, but it smells interesting. Both have the underlying scent of any fresh olive soap, where the olive leaves are used for colour and scent, and then layered on top is the rose or the laurel. Now we're not talking about the kind of laurel used in killing bottles; that kind of laurel is Prunus laurocerasus, and not the bay laurel used in Syria for traditional soaps, and in the Caribbean for Bay Rum. If it were possible to subtract the scents of all the spices added to bay rum, perhaps this scent is what would be left. Fascinating.
