Andrew, find a picture you like and reduce it to 80 pixels. Save the picture to your hard drive. Upload it in your profile.

I have found thousands that I like, but I am to slow and dumb to figure out how to put it down to 80 pixels. So I stay with the Mooby cow for now. :D

You can use the picture manager program on your computer or you can download picassa from google. Both programs have a resize feature.

You can always mail me a picture and I'll size it and put it in your profile for you.

In gimp, click the knife symbol to crop the image.

As for the word avatar, it is sanskrit for "incarnation".

I will take you up on that offer Chris. I have limited access to most sites (I'm actually surprised that I can get on this one) and downloading anything is prohibited.

http://www.google.fr/search?q=online+image+editor will give you plenty of editors that you can use on-line. No need to download anything.

This one in particular seems to be reasonably good: http://www.imageeditor.net/
And this one as well: http://www.online-image-editor.com/index.cfm

Chris
No question, Chris' method is the easiest for those of us who are 'avatar-challenged". He fixed up my choice of my alter-ego Inspector Morse pics in a couple of hours.

It is actually quite easy to do yourself (and probably a lot faster than having Chris do it), so without further ado I present you:

*Drum roll*

The amazing tutorial for www.online-image-editor.com

In this tutorial I will show you how to get from this:
Image
to this:
Image
using http://www.online-image-editor.com/

Step 1 - Get the image into the editor
Clicking on Image in the tool bar will give you something like this:
Image

As you can see, you can either use an image you have on your computer, or you can use one from somewhere on the internet without having to download it first. Choose whichever suits your needs.
Notice the options with the red circles? I suggest that you select the same - this way the quality won't be degraded quite as much when you're done. Only do this, however, if the image is not already in GIF or PNG format.
Click [upload]

Step 2 - Select the portion of the image that you need
This will place a red rectangle over your image. (Notice that I don't show everything here).
Image
This can then be resized using either the mouse by grabbing the edges or by typing in the values in the text boxes. The values are in pixels.
When you have selected the part of the image that you want, click [Apply]

Step 3 - Resizing
Result:
Image
Make sure that the Aspect Ratio box is ticked (the red circle), otherwise it may look a little strange.
Now type in the dimensions you want. Remember that neither side may be more than 80px (pixels).
Don't worry about jagged lines (as you can see above), they won't be there in the final result.
Click [Apply]

Step 4 - Checking the result
You're almost done.
Image
The size should be no more than 36000. If it is more than 36000 go to step 4.5 else go to step 5.
If you're otherwise unsatisfied with the result you can use Image to go back and forward.

Step 4.5 - Reducing the file size
In the menu select "Edit" > "Convert To" > "JPG"
Image
Verify that the size is 36000 or less.
Go to step 5.

Step 5 - Saving
Right-click the image and select "Save image as"
or
Drag it to your desktop
or
Use "File" > "Save" (in the editor's menu, not the browser's)

Step 6 - The aftermath
Upload it here and enjoy your new avatar.

Here's a freebie that you can use on your computer. It will come in handy for simple touchups and resizing for all of the pictures you'll want to post here. In fact someone here told me about it.
