New Puppy - Need Name

New Puppy - Need Name

Post by bnett »

We're getting a dog in a couple of weeks (a miniature australian shepherd), and we're looking for a name. I thought I'd poll for suggestions here.

My wife is Scottish and very fond of her heritage, and our girls are deeply involved in Scottish Highland Dancing. A good scottish name would be preferred, but is not essential. "Duncan" seems to have the lead in our house at the moment.

The puppy is a male, and it's coat is red with white markings.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

My neighbour's have had Australian Shepherds. The first was full size and the second a miniature. Extremely intelligent dogs. Their names were Sammie and Rocky. For a Scottish name, Angus sounds just about right.

Australian shepherd?

Blue, Mate, or Trumper.

Scottish:

Haar*, Jimmy or Wullie.

*Haar is the seamist which drifts in on the eastern coast of Scotland. Jimmy as in "See you, Jimmy", a general, non-specific Glaswegian threat, Wullie after the famous comic stip "Oor Wullie".

Or Forbes, as in Castle Forbes, of course.

English has been spoken in Scotland for several centuries now. Because of this, it has become Scots, the form spoken in Scotland. As a result, many new names have been coined, not in Gaelic, but in English, but by Scots speakers, therefore GORDON comes to mind.

I doubt if any of you would know about the MacGregor radio control units sold in the UK in the 1970's. Very fetching with blue anodised aluminium casing. I lusted after those, but never got further than single channel with the pocket money I had then. Anyway, they had this glorious cartoon transfer of their mascot 'Wee MacGregor' - imagine a red-hairy Popeye type, in kilt and tam-o-shanter with a large and lumpy club, with the obligatory huge nail through the end. That was him.

So I nominate 'Wee MacGregor' - and call him 'Mac' for short.

Being of Scottish descent on my Mother's side (Clark) I would name your new puppy "Haggis". Aye Laddie, I would give him a good, proper, manly sounding name like Haggis. I do like "Skuttle" though. Be sure to get him a Tartan collar for the full effect.

Regards,

Bill

Negotiations are ongoing at my house, and you gentlemen have provided great fodder for the discussions. By way of summary, here are the names you've offered and their initial reception by the committee:

Angus - previously considered and nixed (was one of my first suggestions)
Scuttle - embraced by me, flatly rejected by the other committee members
King - Neighbor's dog
Gillette - rejected
Kirby/Hoover - cute, but we're in denial about the shedding
Clyde - under serious discussion
Rooney - under discussion
Blue - rejected (he's red)
Mate - rejected (no good reason)
Trumper - rejected ("another shaving name?! No!!")
Haar - Under discussion, not likely to pass, but "E" for effort
Jimmy - rejected
Wullie - Previously considered, rejected, considered, rejected . . .
Forbes - Under consideration as far as I'm concerned, but not likely to survive
Gordon - under serious consideration
Wee MacGregor ("Mac") - under consideration, but the "Wee" isn't appealing to the kids
Haggis - previously considered, and after much angst, rejected (lost in the same round as Hamish)
Fables - under consideration
Scot - Not yet proposed; I'll let you know.

Thanks for the help. Keep 'em coming.

A new name has entered the fray here: Kuyper. It has much pull with the committee at the moment. Dutch, I'm afraid, not Scottish.
