What are you reading?

Feel free to post anything unrelated to wet shaving or men's grooming (I.e. cars, watches, pens, leather goods. You know, the finer things of life).

"A Legacy of Spies" by John le Carré. I had to read "The Spy Who Came In From the Cold" first because the new book relates back to the events of the earlier one. Though I've read almost all of le Carré's works, i had strangely never read the one that really launched his career.

Jim, how would you rate these 2 books? I've been curious about them for quite a while now.

Both are very good, although I'm only about halfway through "A Legacy of Spies". They are fairly short pretty accessible among le Carré books, which can be a bit of a challenge.

Kind of on subject...

I like physical books, I just HAD to state that. But one periodical gave up paper a few years ago and another will stop paper in a few months. The wife asked what I wanted for my birthday and as much as I hated to do it I told her "a Kindle". Then began the 'net research to find what I wanted. Her 8" Kindle is fine, but I discovered that there's a 10" Kindle. Reviews of the latest version told me that it was a downgraded unit for cost purposes (why do companies deliberately make garbage?? I'll never understand that!). Ultimately we drove 20 miles to go to a Best Buy to see more Kindles. They had a 10" on display and the display wasn't terrible as I'd been lead to believe from reviews. It was the old model before the neutering. Best Buy reports on the website that it's out of stock, but the website lies. Today the brown truck should be delivering it. Since we have Amazon Prime what will I be reading? Lots of stuff; my "lost" periodicals certainly. But I need to figure out how to get my saved books from my wifes Kindle and into mine so that I can use them.

I'm sure I'll find more uses for it also. Movies for one, a 10" display is large enough for a movie and Amazon will allow a movie download for watching later (so I've been told).

Brian, that's what I did also. Now all of our books are available to both of us. If I recall the process was easy, once I figured out how to do it.

The Last Patriot by Brad Thor. I found the short essay he included regarding Thomas Jefferson's most serious challenge while POTUS to be very intriguing.

I bet it was a family group, whatever it's called. That's how I did it. I was able to get some of them, but not all. Some of them I couldn't get so I just found them and downloaded. They were free books anyway, cookbooks from years ago. I find glancing at the methods and recipes from long ago interesting. But even there I couldn't get all of them. No big deal they're on the wifes Kindle. But I haven't missed them so they'll probably remain in her cloud.

There is another way to trade data... the Dropbox (it's free for a relatively small amount of storage; 2 or 3 GB). Anything put into it can be used by others with the proper codes. I put stuff there if I don't want to fill up my RAM chip. It's accessed thru wifi, so it's not always available, but so far it's worked for me. I haven't found a way for full access in the dropbox thru the Kindle yet, but I'm still trying. For instance, tonight I wanted to delete a 400+mb file and couldn't find a way to do it with the Kindle. But the desk computer can. I put my competition videos on it for folks on another forum and delete the last ones to prevent the dropbox from filling up. I'm told they enjoy them. I supply the link and they can access them.

The 10" kindle works fine and it really works great with movies. Now Amazon allows downloading them to ones Kindle to watch later. With the added RAM chip (56, 64 GB, I don't remember) I can download many movies (20 or so at full resolution) to watch wherever I want, but so as not to be annoying to others I watch them when no one else is around and just read when I'm in a crowd, such as waiting for an appointment. I find that at night after the wife has gone to sleep that I watch what I was watching with Fire Stick TV on my Kindle. The resolution appears to be just as good as on our 55" FS and the volume is much lower, but just fine for watching at 18" or whatever it is. It also uses a lot less juice.

That reminds me, I need to subscribe to the periodicals that no longer use paper.
