Tawny Port

Post by PT »

Any other tawny port lovers here? :D
I have tried to convert some of my friends but they all complain it tastes like cough syrup...
So far I have to say my favorite brand is Taylor Fladgate.

I like tawney ports in the winter time with my pipe. The best everyday tawney that I have tried comes from Australia. It is made by Yalumba. The Clocktower is an excellent daily pour and if you want to significantly upscale try their Galway Pipe.

Yup, I like the stuff...possibly a bit too much. My favourite too is Taylor Fladgate.

My father has a weakness for tawny port. He keeps Warre's Otima on hand for everyday consumption and a few bottles of Porto Rocha and Kopke squirrelled away for the collection. Me, I'll drink whatever I buy. Then again, I can't afford to stockpile 50-60 year old Portuguese dessert wine at this point in my life.

Most of the Aussie ports I've had have been great, our brothers in Oz are quite justifiably proud.

There's a small chain store called "Trader Joe's" in the So Cal area. Their house brand port is very good and inexpensive.

I have not tried any Australian tawny port, I'll have to ask around and try to find some.
Warre's Optima 10 year was very good.
The oldest tawny I have tried is 20 year. But I plan to buy a bottle of Taylor Fladgate 40, for my 40th birthday. :P

Being an uncultured yob, I'm happy with Taylor's ruby offerings. Crusted ports are for those with time, money and cellars. When I want something brown and dry I go for Madeira.

Galway Pipe is excellent with a cigar. It stands up to a robust smoke and both the port and cigar improve. I, too, like port when the weather is crisp. In Houston that happens sometime in February for approximately 8 hours.

Madeira! That makes me think of Jack Aubrey. I have always wanted to try that.

Yes, the one with the yellow seal. PT it should keep well, even in your Arizona heat.

I love port and--gasp--sherry. Heck, there's not much I don't like, with the possible exception of rum. Freshman year of college I mixed rum with the Gulf of Mexico for a killer combo. I have come so far since then...

I have never had a bad wine or fortified wine from Australia or New Zealand. They offer great value and very good quality to my mind.

Currently enjoying armagnac brandy. Took delivery of my snowblower Saturday. It being a seasonal beverage and all...

Trying Sherry is on my "to do" list. I recently tried white port and I am not a fan.

Teetotaler Wendell? My idea of abstinence is the delay caused when someone misplaced the corkscrew.

I have tried a few & these two are the best I've found for a reasonable price:

Noval 10 year old http://www.quintadonoval.com/index_en.html
Graham's Quinta dos Malvedos http://www.grahams-port.com/section.php?id=178
Best regards,

Nice, I have not tried either of those, but I have seen the Graham's around. I'll give it a try for sure.
