Occupy rubbish
Re: Occupy rubbish
Unfortunately, as with most political discourse in this country, the "death to capitalism" crowd is balanced on the "other" side by the crowd which proclaims that any money spent on the collective good is "socialism" -- or worse.brothers wrote:Dare we ask what they propose to replace capitalism??
This country was so much better off when politicians on both sides of the aisle could find a place in the middle to meet and move the country forward. I'll bet back then they all were wet-shavers.

Tell him Orwell was to the left of Stalin.
That's all a mixed bag in my opinion, nothing is black and white.

Public protests of a liberal flavour have always been tainted by smaller groups; during Vietnam the same Worker's Party agitators were seen EVERYWHERE.
Today it is a nasty bunch of 'anarchists' called BLACK BLOCK. I've encountered them in Seattle at the trade protests, Redwood Summer and even nurse's strikes in L.A.
I hate them, always starting violent confrontations unless somebody even more anarchist and violent scares them off
Look past the usual 'woowoo' factor and some seriously upset middle classfolks are there.
What cracks me up are the Teaparty people and neocons getting upset somebody else has stolen the flag they wrapped themselves in as representing America.

The best comment on the politicians from this movement was the sign "I can't afford a Congressman so I made this sign"
Personally, I hope for some very positive outcomes from the OWS movement.
First, getting rid of our obstructionist politicians.
Second, getting rid of our corrupt politicians, (see above)
Thirdly, stopping the unconscionable rewards of corporate leaders. (See French Revolution, ca 1793-1794).
Fourth, a rational tax structure.

I will state my sentiments simply...by submitting that it is becoming more and more clear that critical thinking...logic...is something that is becoming more extinct by the day.
I refer to no one here when I state that people need to stop letting others tell them what to think...and then just letting their minds vegetate to the point that they cannot think for themselves.
And there are plenty of those on all ends of the political spectrum.

Correct! Both are to the extreme left! I find it amazing how many folks think Hitler and National Socialism was a right wing political system. Lack of critical thinking, or mindless automatons repeating something they heard or read, I don't know which.JohnP wrote:And conversely Stalin was only slightly to the right of Hitler.

It never hurts to ask a lot of questions, but also to have enough wisdom to stop short of becoming "too" paranoid about everything. If we're lucky, we have developed a strong set of values that allow us to trust ourselves and our own judgment, when others around us seem to be drifting with the tide.

These protests are supposedly about JOBS (though very few protesters can articulate exactly WHAT they are protesting ABOUT). My favorite episode in all of this was the group that set up a job application table with ACTUAL JOB APPLICATIONS on the tables. I think they got a whopping 3 applications back.

Yeah, that must mean that liberals are Nazis, and want to exterminate all non-Aryans. Great point. Can someone please shut down this thread before I get kicked out of here?ShadowsDad wrote:Correct! Where did you get that information, from Rush or Glenn? Have you been to Zucotti Park, or to any of the other Occupy sites across the country? I have, and it's not just a bunch of hippies and homeless people. It's people like you and me, who have worked all of our lives and are still struggling every month to pay our mortgages, and whose kids have had to take out ridiculous amounts of student loans to pay for college and have no guarantees that they will even be able to get a job in their chosen field ( I have 2 kids in college). The bankers and Wall Street have screwed the American middle class. They have admitted this. It's not Capitalism versus Socialism, It's a bunch of greedy bankers wearing monocles who sold the American middle class a bunch of mortgage backed securities to make the top 1 % rich. They don't give a shit about anyone on this board. If you are not a millionaire you are completely screwed. Best of luck to all of you.gooup wrote:These protests are supposedly about JOBS (though very few protesters can articulate exactly WHAT they are protesting ABOUT). This is one argument I just don't get. Who says anybody gets a job, much less should get a job doing what they want to do? Does the massive amount of debt from attending college suck? Yes, but that is not the fault of corporations, that can be traced to the colleges and many argue it is tied to federal student aid. Choosing a field of study has consequences, and in choosing that field one must accept the possibility that the field they choose may not be of great value.reggiano wrote:and whose kids have had to take out ridiculous amounts of student loans to pay for college and have no guarantees that they will even be able to get a job in their chosen field
America seems to look down on choosing a path that does not require an undergrad or graduate degree, and that is a failure of society.
