I knew I would miss something --- I would add War Horse. The story is wonderful, and the WWI scenes are remarkable.

Brian, I think "Pork Chop Hill" was a little scuffle during the Korean War.

And since war ostensibly exists under the excuse of "good vs. evil", my favorite moving picture of it would be "Platoon". "Good" Sgt. Elias vs. "evil" Sgt. Barnes.

"Full Metal Jacket" wasn't bad, either.

Gallipoli reminds me of another excellent Australian war film, Breaker Morant.

The Sea Wolves (1980)

Gregory Peck, David Niven, Roger Moore, Trevor Howard, Patrick Macnee, Barbara Kellerman.

Based on a true WW2 story: the British must attack a German ship but it's safe in neutral Goa. So they send civilians, ex-soldiers about 60 years old to get the job done.
