Bow Ties - A New AD for Me

Very kind, but even so, I don't attempt to wear bow ties in rural NS, where the folks are solid, sensible down to earth types who would regard a bow tie with extreme prejudice. These pictures are at special occasions (a dinner at HMS Warrior for the black tie, and opera weekends for the others). In fact, I don't even wear one of my splendid Thomas Pink ties at work any more. Long dangling ties are now regarded with great suspicion in hospitals, where they have been shown to be excellent carriers of nasty bacteria from one patient to the next (I think I may have heard that the NHS has banned them amongst hospital doctors). More importantly, I remember some years ago wearing a cream suit, white shirt, purple tie and amethyst cufflinks for rounds and getting a 'look' from a patient. Some weeks later she said to me, when I was less grandly dressed and she had been discharged, that she felt she couldn't talk to me when I was dressed up. I learnt from that, and have restrained my inner Beau Brummell since that time.

And a beard? My son's is a perfect example of reaction formation and I couldn't possibly let myself grow a beard and remain an admin of this site!

I think that all of you guys look sharp with a bow tie!

In the early 70s I bought a couple of bow ties. I enjoyed how they looked, but didn't enjoy the many people who commented in a fairly critical manner. So I put them away, but still have them, ready to go. Maybe you will inspire me to pull one out the next time I need to wear a tie!

Sometimes I forget that member's avatars don't necessarily represent their true appearance. Maybe subliminally I allowed yours to make me think that somehow you had a beard, not that that's a bad thing, even for an admin of a shaving site. As for Wendell, from the look of his lower jaw in the photo, I'm truly disappointed that his avatar isn't his portrait. What a grand looking gent!

Seeing you guys makes me realize I'm never going to be as fashionable and properous looking. I do wear conventional ties when dictated by work or certain affairs that don't happen very often. But a bow tie would signal a time of worry and turmoil for my dear family, "what should we do about Dad? He's scaring us."

Bowties are wonderful. I wear one about once a month. My favorite belonged to my late grandfather (and namesake), and I am proud to still take it our for a turn every few weeks.

Also: I tie my like a shoelace. Is there anything wrong with doing it this way?

I love bow ties and wear them often. One of the best selections I have found is at www.beautiesltd.com. Not affliated in any way. They send out wonderful catalogs all the time.

Endeavor Morse and I are twin sons of different mothers ...... at least in the grey hair department, that is.

Having realized now the creative power of the BBC, I'm regretful I never
caught John Thaw as Inspector Morse. My only experience was a dalliance
with Tom Baker as "Doctor Who". That leaves out the likes of Monty Python,
Benny Hill and countless other notables on the other side of the pond.

Just to go a little off topic, I highly recommend Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect. I managed to find complete episodes on YT, and enjoyed them enough to order up the set on DVD.

This YT user seems to have a thing for Brit police dramas. It makes it a bit hard to find what you want, but his use of abbreviations and leet-like spelling will presumably keep away the DMCA complaints as no one else can find them either!

Here are my second and third bow ties. The blue striped tie is a Rooster brand and the brown one is a Countess Mara. I bought them at Stein Mart.

Prime Suspect is very, very good stuff as well, but I don't think I have ever seen Helen Mirren with a bow tie on any of the episodes I have watched. I have only seen a few episodes though.

You have missed something very good indeed. The books are great, the series even better. Thaw was a wonderful actor, and portrayed Morse far beyond author Colin Dexter's greatest hopes.

Catch the premier episode of Endeavor --- not sure if it's on netflix, but I am positive it is somewhere online. Fabulous stuff .... although there are lots and lots of hints around the Inspector Morse episodes. Such good stuff.

Endeavor never wore a bow tie to my recollection, however. But he was a sucker for that 1961 MkII Jag of his.
