Thank you Canada

Post by sgtrecon212 »

Just wanted to say thank you to Canada.. For many things, but in mind right now, thank you for bringing me the rock group April Wine.

Back in 1979 or so, I was dating a girl named JoAnn. For my birthday, she gave me a cassette of the album First Glance. I have had a copy of that album, in some media type or another, ever since.

I have even learned to play my guitar to that album.

So thanks a lot Canada. One of my all time favorite things. And you brought it to me.

Y'all can keep your Justin Bieber and Celine Dion, but thanks also for Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, The Guess Who and Joni Mitchell.

Edit: I meant to add The Band.

And don't forget Rush - one that I am particularly fond of personally.

I miss old Levon. He really was the heart and soul of the Band. And Cohen can hold his own against Dylan any day. Not as prolific, but every bit the genius.

At the 1996 Grey Cup festivities in Hamilton, I met a member of, and that night saw in performance, the band Prairie Oyster. I enjoyed them a lot.

I later picked up an album of theirs called Blue Plate Special, and still enjoy it fifteen years later.

Since we’re waxing nostalgic over Canadian rock bands:

Mashmakhan
Mahogany Rush
The Wackers

(recalled from my ill-spent youth in many, many bars about Montreal).

While not a massive fan, Blue Rodeo also comes to mind for me here .... some might even want to throw in Loverboy ---- but not sure that I would.

Mike Reno got away with wearing a headband. I don't know how, but he did it!

I don't remember any of these groups/bands, other than the Guess Who. Unfortunately, until now, I didn't know the Guess Who was Canadian.

Yup -- Burton Cummings from Winter-peg -- and apparently still summers there splitting his time between Canada and Sherman Oaks, Ca.

He also reportedly has a place on Vancover Island for "getting away from it all".
