Well, Michael/Bargepole's mention of Old Spice got me to exploring, and I found these on the OS website, an example of modern, off-kilter advertising much like the Dollar Shave Club video. Silly most, but still clever. It was also good to see Heather Graham out and about again (don't blink).

As my buddy Oscar pointed out, you have to have some age to appreciate the original formula.Racso_MS wrote:If you have to ask, you are too young to remember...dosco wrote:I am not familiar with this. A company named Shulton made the original Old Spice, I believe, sometime in the 1930's. As the years went by, the company would come out with really cool looking bottles or canisters for the A/S or cologne, usually with a nautical theme. Example: a whale's tooth, a glass bottle shaped like a frigate or some other sailing vessel, a light house, etc. I still have a few of these around the house somewhere. Later still, they made a musk and lime scent along with the original.
Back in the day Shulton made an excellent tallow based shave soap. They also made a very good bath soap called "soap on a rope".
After P&G bought out Shulton, the original formula went all to hell. It's just not the same. Old Spice was never expensive to begin with, all things being equal, so why screw it up? The P&G version always smelled “off” to me. There is simply something missing.
I'm 60 years old and I grew up with Old Spice because my father used it. I began using it myself when I began to shave at age 13, so I'm very keen as how the scent should smell.
Luckily, I managed to secure a stash of the Shulton formula after my first try of the P&G version. The reformulated (new) version really sucks compared to the original.

I'll be 43 this year ... and yes, I figured it was some sort of old skool reference (that's why I asked ... )desertbadger wrote: As my buddy Oscar pointed out, you have to have some age to appreciate the original formula.
Gotcha. How would you describe the original Shulton scent?A company named Shulton made the original Old Spice, I believe, sometime in the 1930's.
