Very basic appliance question
Very basic appliance question
I'm roasting some red peppers in our broiler this evening. Our broiler is one of those God awful bottom drawers with a stiff door. It looks like I've knocked the gasket that seals the door when it's closed loose. Should I rush to fix it since this is a gas stove, or will the pilot light burn off any gas so I shouldn't worry about leaking?
Regards,
Mike

Re: Very basic appliance question
Not to worry, the pilot light burns off the gas that feeds it and the broiler stops when you turn it off so there is no leakage anywhere to be concerned about. Absence of a gasket will cause some small heat loss which is of no consequence since the broiler is doing the heavy lifting.

I agree on all counts, Squire. The door gasket should have nothing to do with a gas leak. Gas leaks are caused by bad fuel lines or burners that don't light properly or stay lit as they should. Theoretically, you wouldn't need a door at all as long as the burner works properly.

Thanks, friends, good to have some confirmation. I suspected this was the case and am glad to have some assurance.

Anytime Mike, I suspect the presence of a small one in your household causes a higher concern about everything, or at least it did with me.

Of course now we have a small one and a smaller one - only the first is mobile (read: terror on two feet) but I don't get to assume anything in terms of safety anymore.Squire wrote:Anytime Mike, I suspect the presence of a small one in your household causes a higher concern about everything, or at least it did with me.

You got that right, Squire. Long ago, I thought you were done when they left home, but it's for life, and the problems only get bigger.Squire wrote:Part of being a parent my man, no matter how big they get.

You can do it, stay in there long enough you can retire and it's their turn to support you. Failing that spoil the grandkids.
