I recently have been downloading from YouTube and recording on DVDs some highly-rated, English-subtitled Asian movies. My wife and I watch them on some evenings during this time of lockdown. Most are quite good.

Raining in the Mountain (1979)
Reign Behind a Curtain (1983)
The Burning of the Imperial Palace (1983)
Rouge (1988)
Ju Dou (1990)
The Scent of Green Papaya (1993)
To Live (1994)
Hana-bi (1997)
Three Seasons (1999)
Postmen in the Mountain (1999)
The Road Home (1999)
Kikujiro (1999)
The Guava House (2000)
A Samurai at War (2001)
Dolls (2002)
The Twilight Samurai (2002)
Story of Pao (2006)
The White Silk Dress (2006)
Old Partner (2008)
The Message (2009)
The Floating Lives (2010)
Masquerade (2012)
Perfect Number (Suspect X) (2012)
Sacrifice (2012)
Yellow Flowers on Green Grass (2015)

If you can get into them, the classic works of Kurosawa are well worth exploring. Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood (based on Macbeth) etc.

An obscure favourite of mine is Tampopo, if you can find it. Youtube has it behind their paywall.

I saw it on VHS back in the olden days of video rental shops.
A Japanese truck driver who styles himself a cowboy hero sticks around to help out a widow struggling to make a go of it with her noodle shop. He gathers up a gang of buddies (á la Magnificent Seven) to do a complete restaurant makeover.
Throughout the movie there are a couple of odd little food-related vignettes that have nothing to do with the main story. Some of those vignettes are a little bit NSFW.
It's a hoot.
And heart-warming.

If you want to dip your toe into Anime, I highly recommend Spirited Away, by Hayao Miyazaki.

Most of the Studio Ghibli productions are great.

More anime:
Cowboy Bebop a series, with a follow-up movie. Bounty hunters always on the brink of bankruptcy and starvation.
Ooh, it appears to be all here on a youtube playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ob_jEzj ... dN-UlpYyIU
Episode 1 -

If you like that, then try Black Lagoon. It's somewhat darker in tone.

On Netflix is The Great Wall. Mostly Asian, except for a bit of Matt Damon.

Moebius, a movie from Korea, is quite good. It is interesting in that not one word of dialog is spoken throughout the entire movie.

I was blissfully unaware of this particular thread until just today. I'll definitely be watching some good Asian movies from now on.

They don't speak because they're all wearing face masks!

Not sure if I could watch them all - but I truly enjoyed Seven Samurai.

Not to hijack my own thread, but we've moved past Asian movies pretty much and are watching Scandinavian detective/murder mystery movies and TV series now. There are a lot of good ones.
