Nikon F6

Post by drmoss_ca »

The last film camera made by Nikon, this is really the same as a D2 series DSLR, but with film instead of a sensor. Big and heavy to a Leica user, it is small and light compared to many of it's digital descendants. Here's a few with a Nikkor 85mm/f1.4:

All on TMax 400 @ ISO400, developed in TMax, scanned on the Imacon Flextight 848. Tomorrow I'm going to try some XP2 (a B&W film that usually is processed in the same C-41 process as colour films as it has chromogenic dye in it as well as silver) which is going to be stand-developed in Rodinal. I'm told it works and gives very little grain.

So here is XP2 @200 in a Rodinal stand development. For the record:
Presoak 3 minutes
6ml Rodinal in 600ml water, roughly 20ºC
Inversions for first 30 seconds
Stand 30 minutes
One inversion
Stand 30 minutes
Fix and wash as usual

I'm very pleased with the smoothness and lack of visible grain. Even at 100% crops there's only subtle grain.

Both Nikon F6, Nikkor 85mm @ f1.4, XP2 @ 200, Imacon 848 scans.

I'm going to try the next one in Diafine after exposure at 200. I found some examples on the web that look just as smooth as with Rodinal.

Today's XP2 was shot at ISO200 and developed in Diafine. There's a bit more grain than with the Rodinal stand, and there was certainly more work getting the scans to look right. All Nikon F6, 85mm/f1.4, and Imacon 848 scans.

Tomorrow I try my first C-41 development, using Ektar 100 and a Tetenal kit. Wish me luck!

For a quick second, I thought the cat was a ferret ...... seriously!

Best of luck with the C-41.

I especially like the portrait of Pippa with the cat. There is a special softness and depth of expression on her face in that one.

Taking on C-41 development strikes me as rather ambitious. I wish you the best on that effort.

I have negatives! Two hours for them to dry and I'll fire up the Flextight and scan them.

I hate to admit it, but I had forgotten what a pain it was to remember colour balance/lighting and colour films. My Ektar 100 proved quite nice in pure daylight, but under fluorescent lighting many of them are unusable. The Tetenal kit is 2-3 years old, so rather than the recommended 3:15 in the developer I stretched it to 3:30. I do have a fresh Unicolor press kit coming so it might go a bit better next time.

Second film of the day, this time Tri-X @1000 in Diafine, via the Nikon F6. The first three are scanned on a Nikon 9000, the last on a K-M 5400.

I am missing the Flextight! It is much quicker than these two backup scanners.

Nikon F6, 85mm/F1.4, Tri-X @640, TMax developer, some Hasselblad X1 scans and some Konica Minolta 5400:

And where did this line come from? It's fainter on the next frame and then goes away:

At that point this expensive "ultimate" film camera declared electronically that there was an error and the rest of the film was wasted. Back to the M7!

A simple fix with positive results. I enjoy seeing folks as they're going about their daily routine.

I've got a bit better at colour developing since my first film above. F6, 85mm/f1.4, Portra 400, Unicolor presskit, motorised Rondinax, Nikon 9000:
