Sam
my mind is officially blown by this brush. Imagine, if you will, a guy who was driving a Toyota Camry for the last year. Really, nobody needs anything more than a Camry - reliable, well made, a very good vehicle. That was my C&E Best. Now, take that same guy, and for not much more than a Camry, let him buy a Maserati Quattroporte. The basic description remains the same - a sedan, seats four adults, you drive it, you reach your destination. Except, of course, everything about the driving experience changes, and for the better.
This brush whips up phenomenal lather with creams and hard soaps, with less effort. The bristle is densely packed and thick/coarse (as in each individual hair is quite girthy, for want of a better word, at the base), with lovely soft tips.
The handle has a pleasant heft to it, it feels like a well made tool feels - substantial and strong. It fits my long fingers nicely, without being a super long handle that might topple out of my mug as I shave.
So - to sum up - other than using something else for creams with strong coloring, I have found my perfect brush. If you like that sort of thing

Tabac Shave Soap - (reduction passes)
Feather Pre-Shave
Hydrolast Shave Paste - (finishing pass)
Jojoba Oil - (finishing passes)
Thayers Witch Hazel - Aloe Vera
Hydrolast - Peppermint Aftershave Conditioner
Geo F. Trumper - Coral Skin Food (post-shave sealant)
This Tabac soap has to be one of the best performing shave soaps out there. The lubrication is incredible. If you're not partial to strong scents however, you may want/have to pass.

You can mistrust me less than you can mistrust him. Trust me.

I'm a big fan of the Tabac soap, but the lather never seems as luxurious as with some others (such as T&H, for example). Do you get a "big" lather out of it? I love the scent, also.blueasajewel wrote:Merkur V.I.S.I.O.N w/Derby Extra

Domenic, I find that with Tabac the best lather comes from a soft, looser knot brush like a Kent BK8. Then again, there is nothing that brush couldn't make a lovely lather from. I had a problem getting a good lather from it with my Tulip however.ichabod wrote: I'm a big fan of the Tabac soap, but the lather never seems as luxurious as with some others (such as T&H, for example). As I was writing my question it also popped into my head that Tabac may need more water than I give it. I have a feeling I know what I'll be using tomorrow.rustyblade wrote:Domenic, I find that with Tabac the best lather comes from a soft, looser knot brush like a Kent BK8. As to a soft, looser knot brush, that does kind of describe the C&E, albeit a lesser grade of hair than the Kent. I get bigger lather with the Sabini, which is officially my go to brush for everything now. I am splitting hairs (as well as shaving them) here, because the lather is by no means lacking in terms of performance. I just want more cowbell, I mean bubbles, dammit!

Since I mostly use soaps and tend to prefer a thick protective lather I don't go for the bowl-filling lather. Again, I find a brush like I mentioned above for this. Also, there doesn't seem to be a problem getting the lather out of it where a dense knot brush (Simpson) doesn't seem to want to let go of the lusciously thick lather. However, the denseness and the feeling of "scrubbing" (not scratchyness) of Simpson's is their strong point. I think I may find myself preferring a Best Badger Kent T12 (with a T8 on the way) for this duty. I found my Savile Row travel in Best good for this duty as well, but is is too small.ichabod wrote: As I was writing my question it also popped into my head that Tabac may need more water than I give it. I don't know if that made any sense, but it boils down to this: I am coming to the conclusion that looser knot brushes are better for soaps (they are easier to make that proper lather I find) and if you want a bit of stiffness, get one in Best Badger (hence the Kent T series).
I can appreciate a dense brush, but I don't think they are necessarily the best tool. While that chubby 1 in best is still new to me, the thing felt so damn thick that it wouldn't release any lather. I think denseness may be overrated. *ducks*

I would be inclined to agree......for me....I enjoy my best shaves with Kent and Vulfix brushes....which are not regarded highly for their density!rustyblade wrote: I can appreciate a dense brush, but I don't think they are necessarily the best tool.
