Nothing gets by you!

Well, Tye was selling a brand new BK4 for $70 shipping included (which was around what I sold my used one for last year), I couldn't resist as I would end up paying nearly double that from a vendor. I've been looking to add this one back to my collection for a while now. I admire Kent a great deal for their consistency and quality.

MWF? I've used it recently on and off and as just I remembered nothing beats the BK's for lathering MWF. No coincidence I suppose.

I've had the Wild Fern for a while and it is one of my very few "summer scents", also it is one of the only scents my wife actually came out and said she likes. The rest she tolerates in silence, unless she really dislikes them, then she complains.

Thanks to a very smooth transaction with Ameet, I now possess a nice tub of the much coveted Coates Shave Cream. It is indeed terrific stuff.

Shavemac pure badger brush
vintage scuttle (I find that TGQ's sample size shaving soap works perfectly in this one)
TGQ Cavendish Black
C.O. Bigelow Bay Rum a/s balm (not needed, but used anyway)
Black Bear brand strop
8/8 Hamburg Ring (first shave with this razor, and also first time shaving with a blade this size)
3 passes, BBS
a nice coat of baby oil to prevent any spotting.

This razor shaves like a champ. Also found out why they call it a Hamburg Ring", the sound while stropping (didn't pre-strop) is a wonderful ringing sound.

  • Prep: Noxzema Deep Cleansing Cream & hot towel
  • Brush: C&E BBB
  • Cream: SCS Smoke & Beads
  • Razor: 1912 GEM Jr.
  • Blade: GEM Blue Star (shave 2)
  • Oil Pass: Leisureguy's Last-Pass Shave Oil
  • A/S: Thayer's Lavender Witch Hazel Toner

  • Results: Another day without a BBS shave. The heat rash was not nearly as bad but the neck still was tender when I did a WTG pass. Also the GEM technique is not great yet. Need to work on it and experiment with the blade angle just a bit. Things will come around. The Smoke & Beads did well as usual. Because most SCS creams they get a bit soft and runny in the warmer months I had change my lathering technique today. I loaded the brush directly from the tub, added just a bit of water and face lathered. Now that was fun and produced even better lather than normal. Seems that when the cream is softer you don't need as much water to produce rich lubricating lather with the SCS creams.

Richard, Ah....all entirely understandable, afterall ( chuckle ). Yes, I suppose you would have limited use for 'summer scents'; here they're congruent almost all year round. Interesting about your wife. The novelist, Jilly Cooper, called the very similiar English Fern, "...the sexiest thing a man can wear...".
Saturday:

Gillette Model #58 & LB NOS Wilkinson blade
T&H/Vulfix #2234
Coate's Lavender shave cream
D R Harris's Pink A/S
Trumpers Fougena

Well, I've not had an opportunity to use this brush since last August, as I lent it to my son to use at college. Same old story; nothing lathers old school creams better, really. Very comfortable handle as well, and it's never lost a bristle as far as I know. If you can't abide 'floppy' then you can't......but you also can not fault it's performance.
Regards,
Gordon
