Sunday Shave
Just to set the record straight, the Gillette 7 O'Clock Black that I used yesterday is not manufactured in Russia, but India. I had received it in a pack of Gillette Indian Wilkinsons as (I guess) a promotion. I like the Indian Wilkinsons, but the 7 O'Clock Blacks are not for me.
Now for today's shave:
Sunday, February 21, 2010
Merkur Long Handled Progress
Astra Superior Platinum (shave #4)
Simpson Colonel X2L
Tabac Soap
Dickinson’s Witch Hazel
Ogallala Bay Rum Toner
Wonderful shave this morning. The WH alone would have been a fine finish but the Ogallala Bay Rum just added to the total experience. The scent--a very light one--of the Bay Rum also integrated well with that of the Tabac.

"Vance, perhaps there's a difference in beards, technique, whatever, but I've gone eight shaves with a 7 o'clock black label."
Yes, I'm sure they are well-liked by some. I understand they are rather expensive and are considered a "premium" blade. I get the best results, though, from Astra Superiors, Gillette 7 O'Clock Yellows, Iridium Supers, and Feathers. I've been getting around 10 shaves from the Iridiums, making the cost per shave fairly close to that of the Astras (from which I get around 5 shaves).
I think the wet shavers' mantra of "YMMV" is nowhere more applicable than with blades (although scents might run a close second).
Glad the Blacks are working out so well for you.

Sunday Morning:
Hot Shower/Hot Towel/Proraso Glycerin Cleansing Bar
1966 Gillette TECH (Ball End)
Iridium Super (Shave #3)
Vulfix #18 Boar
Van Der Hagen Deluxe SS
Pinaud Clubman A/S
Vaseline IRML Lotion
Another fantastic shave while keeping it basic. The Iridium was JUST able to squeak out a third shave, although it was a tad rough. Got some of my best lather ever from the Van Der Hagen. Definitely one of the best readily available shaving products at a fraction of the cost of the other junk that stores sell. Very happy with today's shave.

Rooney Alibaba Medium
AOS Sandalwood Shave Soap
Moss Scuttle
Rugra 5/8, touched up on 16K and CrOx leather then balsa paddle strops
Generic witch hazel
St. Charles Shave Sandalwood AS
It's taken over a year for me to get shaving with a straight to where it's routine and BBS shaves are an expectation instead of an occasssional outcome. I find that honing and "touching-up" are more frequent than expected from what I read on the forums (here and SRP). The suggestion that this may be to imperfect stropping could be true. Is touching up after a few shaves (~4-5) that unexpeted given the life a DE blade is typicaly 3-7 shaves?
