SnakeCharmed? Again?

• Pre: Clearly Natural -- Vitamin E

• Soap: Tiki Bar vegan shave soap -- Woody
• AS: Krampert's Finest Bay Rum

After being smitten by the MCMXIV & a less than stellar shave from the Cobra last time I decided a fresh blade was needed to really revisit the Cobra for a few shaves. I also cannot use the same technique that I do with the MCMXIV. Today's shave was stellar and I now have a better appreciation for both the Cobra & MCMXIV and how to get the best out of both of them.

The Cobra is more like a finely tuned, supremely aerodynamic race car. Built for speed, pure speed, and less concern on handling. You hit even a small speed bump or pothole with a machine like this and major damage can be done. The MCMXIV may not have the pure speed & power of the Cobra but it shines in its agility and nimbleness. The bumps & curves can be dealt with much easier with no damage.

Both are great but need to be used with their strengths in mind.

Make it a great day for others!

Soap = TRBeck and Chris Moss homebrew soap (getting to the end of both pucks = mashing the remainders together)

Brush: VDH (el cheapo, I assume Boar hair)

Razor: 1970s Gillette Black Handle SS

Blade: Personna HU (2nd shave)

Method: 3 pass with slight buffing on neck

A/S: Black Magic Green

I haven't posted in SOTD for awhile, but I got a particularly good shave this morning (after an excellent shave yesterday) and thought I'd proclaim it to the intarwebz!

Tuesday:

Gillette Model #58 & LB Wilkinson blade
Kent BK4
D R Harris's Lavender hard shave soap
D R Harris's Pink A/S
Trumpers Spanish Leather

Like the Penhaligon's EF I have very little of this soap left so I use both of them sparingly. I realize I can still get more of the Harris's soap but the last cake I got had no fragrance and that has made me wary. No one who has bought their soaps very recently has complained of this issue so it was probably just and odd batch but having now to rely solely on sight unseen ( or sniffed ) purchasing I'm still a little uneasy. This was an unusually close shave, BTW, but it was also the second day with this blade and that has always been the best shave for me....days 2 & 3 with a good blade.

Reached in & pulled out a snake.

• Pre: Clearly Natural -- Vitamin E
• Razor: Cobra Classic
• Blade: Feather Professional (2)
• Brush: Rudy Vey Alibaba Black Fibre
• Soap: Tiki Bar vegan shave soap -- Woody
• AS: Krampert's Finest Bay Rum

Image

Continuing my race car analogy with the Cobra (been watching Turbo with my son), I can get a great shave when I keep her in 3rd or even 4th gear. However, if I open up the throttle I can really hurt myself.

I'll continue with the Cobra again tomorrow. At this point I am certain that nothing out there can compete with the wicked sharpness of the Feather Professional type blades. My daily shaver will most likely remain the MCMXIV, but the Cobra is still something special.

This weekend I'll be in Atlanta visiting my family for an early Christmas. I plan on taking the Streamline and a Feather "spineless" blade to revisit this winning combo.

Make it a great day for others! Hump Daaaeyyyyy!

-- Wednesday--

Prep: hot water wash with Stirling bath soap
Razor: Merkur Progress set to 3.5
Blade: Ладас Суперсталь (4)
Brush: Simpson P8 TSN LE (59/200)
Soap: Cella
Scuttle: Georgetown Pottery G5 in Hamada glaze
Post: Thai Crystal deodorant alum stick and Simpson Aftershave Balm

Image

Image

Result: BBS in 3+ passes. Second shave with the P8. What a lovely brush! My usual preference for smaller knots is fading with this brush and SOC SE Mixed. Huge knots, both of them and just amazing at how nice they feel. P8 is super soft and releases the lather perfectly. I often like a scrubbier brush, but P8 has such an amazing feel that I enjoy the scrubless softness of this brush thoroughly. It made short work of Cella and created amazing, perfect lather. Just a lovely, high quality beautifully made brush.

The rest of the gear was perfect as well. Progress is simply peerless. I took a hiatus from it, but now I am fully in Progress land.
