I have had similar experiences with the chin. The landscape down there is pretty rugged, high and low spots and some seriously thick and tough whiskers, to make matters worse. The only solution I ever found was to go slow, make sure the razor is seriously sharp, and getting used to the fact of life that my chin would never be BBS, regardless. Going ATG with a straight razor on my chin is guaranteed disappointment.
As with most of us, when I use a straight razor I never expect or obtain BBS. On the other hand, that is an every day occurrence with the General SE safety razor from Colonial, easily attained and thoroughly enjoyed. With that understanding, I still enjoy using a well-sharpened straight razor on occasion whenever circumstances permit.
