Hart #8, a prototype of the Series 2 razors, homemade soap, Omega synthetic, Penhaligon's Eau de Cologne:

SOTD270720.jpg
SOTD270720.jpg (105.65 KiB) Viewed 3172 times
Unlike the first 2009 prototype, this one from early 2010 has a Hart Steel stamp on the shank, but the reverse simply says prototype rather than the usual 'Made in USA' and the 'artisan's' initials.

Image

By this time they had gone from 2 to 4 such fellows to keep up with demand. The Series 2 razors offered the choice of a mirror finish rather than a brushed finish only, the option of round points and some new scale choices. This one has resin scales. But there were engineering changes; first series razors were not always ground to the same blade width, and that meant that those >6/8 had bevel angles that were too narrow, leading to complaints of chipped edges. The second series had slightly thicker spines to correct for this, and were ground a bit thicker too. A number of them were circulated for comments, with some amusing consequences. One fellow honed his like this:
Hones:
Shapton 8k pro
Shapton 15k pro
Shapton 30k glassstone
Maruka Nakayama Asagi with Kamisori stamp
Muller Thuringen

Pastes:
Flexcut Gold on a roughout hanging strop
1.8 micron boron carbide on a roughout hanging strop
Harbor Freight white polish on a linen paddle
Dovo red on a linen hanging strop
Dovo black on a leather hanging strop
0.5 micron chrome oxide on a paddle strop
0.3 micron aluminum oxide on newspaper
0.1 micron diamond on hardwood
0.1 micron iron oxide on newspaper
Dovo White on a hanging canvas strop
And then complained it had a wire edge! A personalised pair were sent out to a Big Name and were never acknowledged. Ah! Human nature...

Monday SOTN
razor - Edwin Jagger DE87
blade - Astra SP (18)
soap - Italian Barber "Amici"
brush - Simpson Special 1 in BB
post - warm water rinse, "Pure & Natural" Alum stick, cold water rinse
AS - Italian Barber "Amici" AS splash
music - CHMA-FM campus radio, on a Grundig FR200 multi-band wind-up radio.

This is my first time using both I.B. "Amici" products, which came as part of a generous PIF described in the Acquisitions thread. \:D/
The soap is pretty good. It lathers easily and is sufficiently slick. The scent of it and the AS is pleasant and very mild, but to my nose it faded fairly quickly. SWMBO could still smell it (close up) an hour or so later, and she said she liked it.
  • Olfactory Pyramid:
Top Notes: Red Grapefruit, Lemon, Orange
    Heart Notes: Spices
Base Notes: Amber, Musk, Hay, Tonka Bean, Vanilla, Patchouli
Sure, I guess.
It was very mild to apply too, with hardly any alcohol sting.

Hart #9, the original pre-production prototype. No markings, no jimps, ebony scales (not resin). A spectacular shaver, as might be expected as Tim Z. made it, which led to my multi-year campaign to persuade him to make me a bigger one. Homemade soap, a Simpson CH2 Manchurian, and L'Artisan Parfumeur Timbuktu. I'm well content with the shave!

SOTD TUESDAY MORNING, JULY 28, 2020

I would say that my two sharpest straight razors are the Genco 35 and this Double Duck Goldedge. Neither razor’s shave comes close to my two Feather SS Barber’s Razors equipped with a Feather Super. I’ll just say it, they are an order of magnitude sharper! I shaved my right non-dominant side with the Feather SS and the left dominant side with the DD Goldedge to give it a leg up. The DD was recently honed with a new bevel set and about as sharp as it could be. Maybe I’m psychologically predisposed towards the Feather and the Feather Super blade, but the comparison was a DFS on the left side above the jawline and a VBBS on the right. I realize I’m only thirty or so shaves in, but I will spend next month with a shave focus on my three Barber’s razors.

Thank heavens for the new Fine Accoutrements safety razor. I used it to clean up my mug to the requisite VBBS level. It provided the same level of service for my dome. Now I realize the whole straight razor mantra about the willingness to settle for a nice smooth DFS. I’ll admit it. I just can’t do it! I’ve grown accustomed to that lovely velveteen feeling on both face and head, and find myself running my hand over the shave surfaces over the course of the day. I admit that I do tend to be bit OCD, but that always served me well during my working career, and it’s just too ingrained in my personality at this point to change, not that I’d even want to. More power to all my shave brothers who can settle for what I consider a sub par shave. I just can’t. I feel cool, clean and delightfully velveteen.

RAZOR: Double Duck Goldedge 6/8 (Mug), Fine Accoutrements New LC Tribute Safety Razor (Dome)
BLADE: Suneko DE (5)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Rabid Banana Preshave Cube
BRUSH: Viking Silvertip Badger
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat w/ 6 drops of M-Bomb
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Humphreys Lilac WH and Osage Rub. Finished with A&E Post-Shave Serum.

Tuesday SOTN
razor - Gillette Black-handled Super-Speed
blade - Astra SP (19)
soap - Stirling "Sharp Dressed Man" (new to me)
brush - Stirling 2-Band Synthetic
post - warm water rinse, "Pure & Natural" Alum stick, cold water rinse
AS - Clubman Vanilla (new to me)
music - CHMA-FM campus radio

Something in the soap may have caused the slight burn feeling in the 2nd and 3rd passes, similar to how some lime-scented soaps affect my skin. I suppose a more fair test would be to use a fresh blade in a mild razor.
Their description sez: Beef tallow, lanolin, shea butter. / “Patterned after the famous Green Irish Tweed scent that was created for Cary Grant.”
Whatever that means.
*google-google-google*
  • Green Irish Tweed (by Creed)
  • TOP NOTES - Lemon, Verbena from India, Peppermint
  • MIDDLE NOTES - Violet Leaves
  • BASE NOTES - Florentine Iris, Sandalwood, Ambergris
Okay, no Lime there. :-k

The Clubman Vanilla is pretty nice. It reminds me of Mennen Skin Bracer without the menthol. Pity it doesn't last very long, but perhaps I was using some old stock. (from a PIF)

SOTD WEDNESDAY MORNING, JULY 29, 2020

I enjoyed the shave with the Monsieur Charles Barber’s razor. The Schick B-20 Proline took a bit of doing to load, but performed decently. DFS all around the mug which I cleaned up with the Rex Ambassador to my desired VBBS level. The Rex is an awesome head shaver and delivered the same quality shave to the dome. This little Kent Synthetic is a surprisingly good lather generator. Great shave! I feel cool, clean and velveteen!

RAZOR: Monsieur Charles (Mug), Rex Ambassador (Dome)
BLADE: Schick B-20 Proline (Mug), Suneko (6) (Dome)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by Rabid Banana Preshave Cube
BRUSH: Kent Infinity Synthetic
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat w/ 6 drops of M-Bomb
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Humphreys Lilac WH and Osage Rub. Finished with Krampert’s Frostbite AS Splash.

Wednesday SOTN - Further exploration of the PIF contents.
razor - Gillette Old Style
blade - Astra SP (20, and done)
soap - RazoRock "Tobacco #1" (new to me, but discontinued?)
brush - APShaveCo SynBad
post - warm water rinse, "Pure & Natural" Alum stick, cold water rinse
AS - Clubman Musk After Shave Cologne (new to me)
music - :-$ none tonight

- The RR soap was (like the Amici) easy to lather and slick enough. Scent was very faint though.
- The AS was okay. Like other Clubman aftershaves, if feels pretty good a few hours later.

Overall, a painless BBS. What more do we really need, right?
Looking forward to a fresh blade tomorrow. I'll probably try a "Shaverboy" from the PIF.

SOTD THURSDAY, JULY 30, 2020

Another sub par face shave with a freshly honed vintage razor. My son shaved with it after honing it and claimed it passed some hair test with flying colors. He then stropped it on a pasted(?) strop and then on a leather one. I have no idea what the latter sentence means, but my son assured me it was as sharp as my Feather Barber’s razor. In any case I ended up with VBBS cheeks and a DFS neck, which I again cleaned up to VBBS level with the FrankenFamex.

A FB shave brother from down under mentioned that the maker of Suneko nanocoated blades had stopped producing them. They apparently succeeded in developing a blade coating as effective as the venerable Personna 74’s. I usually toss my DE blades after two uses, but my shave today was the 7th shave on this Suneko blade which is still going strong. Blades that last as long as these are clearly not as profitable, thus the shutdown. The blade sheared right through the noggin stubble and is still going strong. I’m glad I purchased as many as I did. My shave today left me cool, clean, and quite velveteen.

RAZOR: Lord 6/8 (Mug), FrankenFamex (Dome)
BLADE: Suneko DE (7)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Rabid Banana Preshave Cube
BRUSH: Omega Pro48 Boar
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat w/ 6 drops of M-Bomb
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Humphreys Lilac WH and Osage Rub. Finished with Laura’s Tobacco & Bay Balm.

razor - Edwin Jagger DE87
blade - Shaverboy Super Stainless (1) - new to me
soap - Col. Conk Lime Glycerine Shave Soap - new to me
brush - Omega 10086 Boar Travel Brush
post - warm water rinse, "Pure & Natural" Alum stick, cold water rinse
AS - Italian Barber "GIT" - new to me
music - CHMA-FM campus radio

The soap, in spite of being Lime-scented, did not irritate my skin mid-shave the way other Lime soaps do. It's sort of a Jell-O or candy kind of lime, so maybe it uses a different fragrance chemical. It performed pretty well too. The small container required the small brush.

The "GIT" AS seems to be discontinued at IB, but a bit of googling leads me to believe that it's an abbreviation of "Green Irish Tweed" (a clone of the Creed scent?). See also the Stirling "Sharp Dressed Man" soap mentioned in my Tuesday SOTN. It must be a popular scent.
SWMBO and I find the GIT AS scent to be "meh", but not offensive. I'll probably finish the bottle, albeit slowly. It does have a pretty good post-feel.

The "Shaverboy" blade was a pleasant surprise. The first shave with it was comparable to, I don't know, Astra SS, Personna Blues, or Gillette Silver Blue blades, I guess. Similar balance of smooth and sharp. We'll see how well I like them on shave #20.
Packaging is cardboard tuck of 5, each blade with a printed outer wrap and plain paper inner wrapping. No wax dots.
...tick-tock-tick-tock-tick-tock...
I just learned that it's a Canadian brand, shipped from Montréal (but made in China) and you can get them for CAD$7.95/100, or CAD$67.95/1000 blades. Standard shipping to me is ... *free*.
If they last half as long as the Astras, that's still a mighty attractive price.

One of my first concoctions, John, was to melt Conk lime soap with Conk bay rum soap. Smells great! And in honour of that, today we have:
ERN Eagle and Snake with "U-boat prow" point, homemade soap, Omega boar, Grand Bay Lime Bay Rum:
