SOTD TUESDAY MORNING, JULY 20, 2021

“And so it goes” as Kurt Vonnegut said in one of his better appreciated books, “Slaughterhouse Five”. As we age we begin to realize that we’re no longer the star and director of our own movie, but rather just a bit player in a much more majestic epic. We pass through childhood to young adulthood. Meet our partners, raise our children, and if we’re lucky even get to experience great-grandchildren.

Unfortunately, along the way we also experience the loss of a beloved spouse, a grandchild, health blips, and dear friends too numerous to mention, until suddenly we find ourselves sitting on the sidelines watching our progeny go through the same trials and tribulations we did. And believe it or not this shave hobby and the many dear friends I’ve made through it, most of them much younger, sustain and keep me moving.

Although I grew up long before cellphones and video games, I do appreciate the opportunity to look up analogies relating to those topics. One of my friends, and the master of the 30DC thread had a plastic model called “Vault Boy” (@Primotenore) as his avatar. My grandson explained the video game reference for me. Knowledge grows, “And so it goes!”

Today’s shave was the best two handed mug shave yet since leaving rehab! Of course, the Puma 88 was no slouch and delivered a luxurious three pass MWF shave. I realize there’s tons of artisan soaps out there with interesting smells, but for some reason I just keep reaching for the Fat! It never lets me down and leaves me with an incredible post shave skin feel. My little vintage Ronson safety razor loaded with a Schick B-20 Proline injector left my noggin stubble free and smooth as velvet.

RAZOR: Puma 88 5/8 (Mug), Ronson Safety Razor (Dome)
BLADE: Schick B-20 Proline Injector
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: JT Sapele/Resin Handled Omega Pro48 Boar Knot
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Osage Rub and Cremo Cooling Post Shave Balm.

This blade is one of those hollows (probably about half-hollow) that is as stiff as a wedge. Silent cutting, with a slight 'zipping' sensation as the stubble surrenders, and a super-close result. Superb shaver, even if of quirky appearance, and given it was forged entirely by hand by PT himself, that is to be expected.

Re: SOTD July 19 - July 25, 2021 - capsized!

Post by John Rose »

Sunday SOTN

prep - shower with Caprina Fresh Goat’s Milk Original Formula bar soap
razor - Edwin Jagger DE87
blade - Wilkinson Sword (5)
brush - Fendrihan Classic Pure Grey Badger
soap - B+M Seville
post - warm water rinse, DSA “Pure & Natural” alum, cold water rinse
aftershave - Clubman
music - streaming the "Chill Out" playlist from the "CBC Listen" app.

Big tragedy between my 2nd and 3rd pass.
The lather bowl capsized, with the brush in it. (I like to float it in the basin of hot water, making it like a huge modern scuttle.)
It washed out most of my lather, but fortunately there was enough good stuff in the middle of the knot that it got me through the 3rd pass.
