Metric

Post by Zot! »

So why are razor widths given in inches vice mm since most are made in Europe? Brush dims are this way. 6/8 would be 19mm.

Are they given in inches in European countries too?

If they are, could it come from a time when a lot of razors were made in England, which didn't use metric measurements yet? I don't know.

unlike the rest of europe, the UK is only a recent covert to the metric system.

in fact even today it's really a mix of the imperial and metric systems - road signs still measure distances in miles, we measure personal weight in stones and pounds and we still drink pints!
Remember: this is all just wasted time and lives talking nonsense to strangers about pieces of metal, hair and chemical compounds.

Absolutely.

Do the Germans, and especially the French, sell all their razors in inches at home too?

Normally the size is mentioned like 5/8, 6/8, 8/8.
Now if the razor has some wear you would sell it like this:
5/8 XYZ Razor, with effective blade size of....

You can see a example here

Nice chart. You should offer a pdf download so that anyone selling a razor of unusual size can photograph it that way.

I was wondering why razor widths are not given using the metric system of measurement which is used in France, Germany, or internationally for medicine, science, etc. Here is a link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metric_system. The top of the chart above is the metric measurement in centimeters and the bottom is the US/UK measurement in inches. I had to think about the chart to read it. Where the bottom edge of the sample razor first meets both of the horizontal and vertical lines, starting from left to right, and using the red diagonal line, you can read the metric measure using the top, which is 1.59cm, and the US/UK measure using the bottom, which is 5/8 inch.

The metric system (or at least a form of it) is used in nearly every country of the world - therefore a list is probably not required. I think there are only two or three countries in the world using something other than metric. (My information is off the top of my head so the details may be inaccurate.)
