Last week I bought a 1.5-inch wide webbed belt to test as a pasted hanging strop. My old pasted canvas strop was working OK but felt too coarse. I got the webbed belt idea from a thread by Seraphim at B&B.
My version is from Walmart for $8. It is 48 inches long and is 91% nylon and 9% polyester. There are no seams are raised edges. It has a soft, slick, pliant feel but also feels thick and substantial. It doesn't stretch or cup when held taught. It has two D-rings sewn in a loop at one end to serve as a buckle.
I looked at webbed belts at Sears but the Levi belts there were $15 and didn't look or feel better for my purposes. Fabric replacement strops at SRD are only about $10, but I wanted something narrow and long.
I pasted it with a cotton ball dipped in CrO powder and looped it over a closet rod. So far I am pleased with the results. I have stropped some blades upwards of 30 laps and haven't fried an edge yet.
In the photos below the belt is shown laying across two SRD fabric replacements and a Tony Miller canvas strop.

1.5 X 48 Inches of CrO Goodness
Nice.
Try and get a cotton one to compare. I cut the middle seatbelt out if my 94 Escort wagon to see what sort of finish that would provide, but I was sadly dissapointd in the results. The cotton Levi belt is my numero UNO finisher by far. I tried the hard felt fad, the nylon seatbelt, but the cotton hits the sweet spot.
