Shavette to Straight

Post by vash3g »

I've been using a shavette for a while now intermixed with a Feather Portable and would like to move to a real straight. I picked up an old Keen Kutter Blue Steen razor that I plan to send off somewhere to get professionally honed. With the holidays coming up and wishing to use this, I have no strop.

Can you gents recommend a strop to start with? Do I need paste?

Thanks for the help!

The Filly at www.ruprazor.com - starter strop, comes with a smear of CrO on the rough side.
Good shaving,

Normally folks use an untreated fabric strop and an untreated leather strop before each shave. Most hanging strops on the market come with both of these together on the same hanger. The strops at SRD are first class, and you can buy replacement leather inserts in the event of an accident. (http://www.straightrazordesigns.com/ind ... ee9153be7c)

There are some strop conditioners and such that can be used, but you won't need these any time soon for a new strop.

Abrasive pastes can be applied to fabric or leather strops, but these generally should not be applied to your daily-use strop. Theses pastes can be useful for touching up a razor after a few weeks or more of use. You would probably want to consider getting an additional hanging strop just for this purpose one day but there are many options.
