Straight Razor Newbie

Post by pjdatzil »

I am looking to jump into a straight razor. I have been shave with a DE razor for over 3 years. I have always been interested in a straight razor and want to give it a try.

I am looking for a fairly inexpensive "starter." I have found this on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/B-B-21-PROFESSIONAL ... 122wt_1053.

Would this be a good straight razor to start off with? What else would I need to purchase?

Thanks.

I wouldn't get that unless someone can vouch for it. My guess is it would not take a shaving edge. There are some cheap, new razors that can be honed up nicely, but most of the Chinese and Pakistan made razors are junk.

It takes some dedication to break into the straight shaving routine. There are a few strategies. One route is to buy a shave ready razor and a strop and start from there. Another route is to jump in deeper and go ahead and get a hone or two.

The least expensive new Solingen razor I know of is this one:

It would need to be honed.

I'm told this is a good source for inexpensive vintage razors made shave ready:

You can get good vintage razors on ebay for $20 - $35 but you need to know what you are looking at and it would still need to be honed.

Gold Dollar razors from China can be good shavers and they are sold on Ebay for less than most vintage. However, the quality can be shabby on these and they need honing as well. Here is a place that sells them shave ready:

BB is NOT a reputable company..at least for straight razors...

Dovo
JA Henkels
Made in "Solingen" razors
Made in "Sheffield" razors
Make sure NO pitting or rust!
