Razor Meet & Class in Minnesota - S. of Twin Cities

Post by Pauldog »

These guys go beyond using straight razors - they make their own, with Damascus steel, no less!

I just got a call from Randy Tuttle in St. Paul, telling me about a class this weekend at Mike Blue's shop in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, about 30 miles south of the Twin Cities. You can get the details by going forward and backward from this middle page with interesting pictures:

I couldn't tell if it was starting on Saturday or Friday, but I think Randy mentioned Saturday as the first day.

This is the kind of stuff you'll see:

Address:

Cannon Falls MN 55009

I'm tempted to go just to watch. I have no metalworking experience whatsoever, and the closest I've come to using a straight razor is the Rolls. It would only be a 45 minute drive for me.

Hey Paul, it was good speaking with you last night.

For clarification.... this is a 2 part weekend...

Part 1. A hands on class in making pattern welded Damascus steel. The class size is limited to 10 guys and the cost is $200. You will walk out with approx 10 lbs of Damascus steel suitable for grinding into straight razors. The Class is Friday and Saturday, Feb 10 & 11 from 8 am til....? remember, this is a hands on meaning you will be doing the work. Mike Blue is the instructor and he will provide the materials, equipment and instruction But you will be doing most of the work. This is the only time the class will be offered because Mike is moving to Washington state later this spring.

Part 2. Our standard Wet Shaving Razor Meet. Saturday & Sunday. This is geared towards the new guys where we provide instruction/demos and answer all questions. There is always a ton of razors, brushes, strops, hones etc.
The start time is also 8-9 am til ? and the cost is free.
Come on Friday If you want to watch the Damascus class or either Saturday or Sunday or both or all 3 days! :D

The location is Mike Blues workshop in Cannon Falls, Minn.
About 30-35 miles south of downtown St. Paul off Hwy 52.

If you have any questions after reading the thread just send me an email at randydance@comcast.net

Hope to see some of you guys there! :D

Oooh -- would have been fun to go. Too bad I failed to check in to SMF to find out. Well, maybe I'll make a future Wet Shaving Razor meet....

Thanks for the word, Paul!

Hey guys, the class is now over. It was an excellent class. Mike is a very good teacher.
Four guys were students, Charlie Lewis ( Spazola ), tim (32T), Ron (Utopian) and myself (Randydance062449). Skipnord was only able to attend on Saturday but he still got some welding in.
This number worked very well, there was adequate time for each of us to make lots of mistakes and correct them! :D

I took some video, about 60 minutes worth and posted it to Youtube.com
There are 9 separate vids
