Pronunciation of Shave-related terms

Post by icecow »

I learned that Jojoba is pronounced "Heh-HO-ba"

and Shea is pronounced "SHAY"

update: Shea can be pronounced "SHE" or "SHAY" according to merriam-webster

What other shave-related terms have tricky pronunciation?

I want to get many of these straight right from the beginning.

How about Merkur? Is it MUR-kur, or MUR-kure, or MUR-koor, or MAY-kur etc. etc.?

Merkur = mair KOOR, if you want to be picky.
But don't be picky unless you want to.

Gatorade: There's a great French book that will clear all of this up for you. It's called "Le petit Robert". Available at fine bookstores everywhere.

French in Canadian school. Quebec french is a bit different from France. France is more foo-foo Bourgeoisie. Most English speaking Canadians stop learning French-Canadian after the mandated grade 9 (about 13-14 years of age).

Guerlain Vetiver
Roger & Gallet Eau de Gingembre

I love these two, because I can pretend to be urbane and educated. Although I have absolutely no idea whether I’m correct, I always go out of my way to hit ‘em hard, thusly --

Guerlain Vetiver – gair-LAHN veh-TEE-vay

Roger & Gallet Eau de Gingembre – roh-ZHAY ay gah-LAY oh duh zhin-ZHAM-bruh

You can’t take anything for granted, though. My last name is unusual, and one time when a clerk was taking my name down, I let her know, “And that’s spelled just as it sounds.” She replied, “D-U-G?” #-o #-o #-o
