I had a terrible experience this morning. After my shower I performed my usual grooming, but when I went to wax my 'stache, I discovered that my favorite product, a stick wax made by Cook Bates/Cosmetco, was nearly gone. Worse than that, once I got to work and did some searching, I learned that this product is discontinued! eBarbershop produces a wax that they say is based on the same formula, but at $25 shipped for three sticks (the smallest quantity) I'm not sure I can convince SWMBO of its necessity. Especially since she's been warily eyeing my lengthening lip hair and making pointed hints about trimming.

I've been spending some time at the Handlebar Club, and I'm planning to try making some of my own with beeswax and petrolatum, but in the meanwhile, I'll have to make do with the far inferior Clubman tube wax.

Oh, woe is me!

Try to keep a stiff upper lip, Karl.

Karl,

The Handlebar site offers some really nice recipes for homemade wax. Failing that, I listed the following resources several months ago:

http://www.oregonwildhair.com
http://www.skippys.no
http://www.daliwax.com
http://www.firehousemoustachewax.com

You can also make your own. Some DIY tips are available here.

And here is a very complete list of waxes. And finally, a Wax FAQ for you to enjoy.

Update: Score!

This morning I went to a local old-school barber supply (DEF knows it well!) to see what they had in the way of mustache wax. They showed me a selection of Clubman waxes in various colors, but they also had Sandahl's Lucky Tiger stick wax for a very reasonable price. I was excited enough to find that, but then I went wandering around, and I found the real score.

They have these NOS mustache care kits with a brush, a comb, and a stick of my precious elixir. It's all branded with the Brut name, but it's the real no-longer-sold-in-stores thing. I bought two, one to keep and one to possibly sell. If that works out, they had two more in another part of the store!

Stay tuned for a Selling and Trading post, gents!
